Russia is no more an example than North Korea. China isn’t going to take over the world because it has far more problems than we have. Remember a decade or so ago when China was expected to surpass the US in GDP? Current forecasts are that it will never get over 70%.
Several trends are overlapping globally. One is that the US economy is killing every other country’s. Another is that working class people are throwing the rascals out. Who the rascals are depend on the country: usually they are leftists because that’s who was in charge during covid, but in the UK they happened to be rightists. A third is that nationalism is on the rise in the West because frightened people are fleeing intolerable conditions in less stable countries and hoping for better lives elsewhere.
The first trend will be hard to kill. Trump’s economic “policies” might wound it greatly, but in the end the only change that corporate powers will approve of is the removal of regulations that hamper their ability to spend less money. Billionaires are a shibboleth. A few piddling hundred of them who don’t get along with one another? Corporate interests and their investors (banks, hedge funds, etc.) are everywhere, in every congressional district, and exist in the hundreds of thousands. I 'll take them over Christian nationalists when it comes to money.
The second trend won’t go away because the working classes won’t see their lives improved anywhere. They had the advantage for a short period - generously from the 20s to the 70s - and then the changing world smashed them. They have no place in a modern society, unless nations summon a billion people to mitigate climate change. Fat chance of that.
The third trend will make that even harder. Immigration and migrants are hated across Europe just as much in the US. The general attitude that climate change can be ignored because it will take money and sacrifice isn’t budging. Expect another billion migrants to be on the move over that next generation. That’s where the wars will come from, both civil wars and attacks against the nations they’re fleeing. This won’t help anyone anywhere. Exactly the same self-righteous white Christians who want women to produce more children will balk at brown non-Christians doing so. Hypocrisy will trump every government, including Trump’s.
In short, reality is going to win until everybody grows up and agrees to face it. Some of us actually thought a couple of decades ago that the urgency was so great that change would be forced on governments. Denial proved far stronger. Expect the unexpected.
