Well, if she’s your girlfriend, you don’t really have to ask, I mean, it’s generally assumed the two of you will go to the prom together. If she’s not your girlfriend, then just ask her. “Would you like to go to the prom with me?” That way if she already has a date or just doesn’t want to, she can quietly tell you that without anyone being embarrassed. ---

Then I guess I’d go with walking up to the object of your ardor and saying, in a firm clear voice, “Would you like to go to the prom with me?” It worked for me in 1980. It has worked for legions of my students up to and including this year. Trying to be cool has a way of backfiring and making you look like a smarmy douchebag. Being self\_confident and straightforward is the hallmark of alpha males. ---

How well, and in what capacity do you know this girl on a scale of 1 - 10, where: 1 is “I accidentally killed her dog and she hates me with a burning passion” 5 is “we’ve never spoken and she probably doesn’t even know I exist” 10 is “we’re currently dating”. ---

The coolest way to ask a girl to prom is to be straightforward and prepared for rejection. If it makes you feel more confident, pretend to yourself that she may not even be rejecting you–maybe she doesn’t want to go to prom or can’t afford it. Maybe she already has a date, but would have gone with you otherwise. Maybe she only wants to go to prom with one specific person but he hasn’t asked her. And if she ends up going to prom with someone else (or not at all), it’s not an insult–it is just a dance, after all. As long as she isn’t a bitch, she’s going to feel flattered that you even asked. And if she IS a bitch and laughs at you or whatever, you didn’t want to go with her anyway. See how that works? Anyway, by preparing yourself for being told “no,” you won’t go all red and stammery if she declines. Prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. And ask soon because all the good dresses will be gone by April. :v ---

If you’re just playing the numbers hoping she says yes, just ask her with as much confidence as you can muster, in person. As people have mentioned she may have any number of reasons for not going, only one of which is “she’s not that into you.” Making a big production out of it will just make her that much more uncomfortable if she has to say no, and may be a turnoff even if she would otherwise say yes. On the other hand, if you’re really sure she’ll say yes anyway or just plain don’t care, I would suggest thinking of something that isn’t terribly embarrassing, mainly for her sake. Don’t needlessly debase yourself, and don’t do it in front of a crowd of people. ---
