How about according to reality? If a bunch of Beatles fans had organized “Burn the Bible” rallies, what do you think might have happened?
The way I see it Jesus would love all the adulation outwardly and inwardly he would be planning a quick exit, not stopping to smell the grubby feet of misbegotten children nor the smell of enfeebled old armpits; nor to extend his heartfelt gratitude to the million and spiralling steeples in his name and his Mom’s name and his Dad’s erectile disfunctioning; nor would he try to squeeze his camels through the eye of his needle as the longstitched tapestry was flooded in the emotion of it all years ago.
Yep, he’d be gone, scratching his head and wondering WTF that was all about anyways.
Gone!!!
Well, they generally deserve it more, being alive and providing more value while doing less harm.
Lady Gaga, for one.
You actually think more people worship worship her than worship Jesus? Really?
It might be best from here on in if you think these talking points through for accuracy before you put them forth, especially in front of a group that isn’t prone to shouting “Halleluiah! Praise Jesus!” no matter what you say.
Edited to add: Betwwen 20% to 41% of Americans attend church regularly. What percentage of Americans do you suppose are gaga over lady Gaga?
You’re right. She is not very popular.
Yes she is…but not as popular as Jesus. Got another one?
Or do you wish to admit that you are wrong?
I am vanquished.
If we use a broader definition of idolatry, I doubt if Jesus has as many competitors anywhere else as he does in America (in the West, of course). As for church going, eh, whitewashed sepulcher and all that.
No one did less harm than Jesus. No one provided more value. Your posts all seem long on emotion and short on maturity. They seem juvenile.
If there’s a single figure receiving a comparable amount of worship/reverence as Jesus, I’d guess it was Muhammad.
Mohammad was just the messenger of Allah. I’m not certain, but I think Muslims are not permitted to worship anything but Allah.
But he does receive quite a bit of reverence- so much so that Muslim countries’ blasphemy laws protect him as well as Allah. I don’t think any Christian country ever had “anti-blasphemy laws” which included Paul or Moses as protected subjects, perhaps Mother Mary.
To support your argument (my Beatles thing WAS a joke), even Gaga gives praise to Jesus.
What basis do you have for these claims? The religious texts of which he is the focus of adoration and worship?
Also, value to whom?
Nonsense. He started Christianity, which has done immense harm throughout history. Even if you buy the idea that it has done more good than harm (I certainly don’t), that doesn’t make the harm go away. The vast majority of people have done less harm than Jesus; most people haven’t had much effect on the world at all.
And you are simply taking it as a given that Christianity has value; I don’t agree, nor have most people throughout history judging by the fact that most people are not and never have been Christian.
Most of your better-informed atheists blame Paul for this, do they not?
There’s plenty of blame to go around. No Jesus, no Paul after all. Or at least he’d have done something else with his life.
Whatever else Jesus was he was a devout Jew, and like any devout Jew he would have considered it blasphemous for anyone to set themselves on a level with God. All the divine Jesus stuff came after his death .
Even if one doesn’t take his Synoptic quotes about his uniqueness & supremacy as claims to Godhood, he often speaks of himself as the next best thing to God & His right hand man & there is no reason to take those quotes as any less authentic than his “be nice to people” quotes. And btw, Jesus frequently provoked accusations of blasphemy.
