Based on everything he has said and done thus far and all his proven lies, he is immune from losing his loyal, core followers. He is like that televangelist, recently on the news, who wears a four figure suit, a Rolex watch, and who is campaigning for a $60 million private jet so that he “can spread the word of God”. They see nothing wrong.

Not everyone who voted from him is in his base. He got some votes by people wanting to extend the middle digit to Hillary, some would have voted for a wet dog turd if was a Republican dog turd. Some just wanted to shake things up. I think most of these people could be turned away from him. The hard core MAGA crowd, no there’s nothing that would phase them. He could run puppies through a wood chipper, screw his daughter on live TV, and dynamite the Lincoln Memorial and his supporters would just say “Haw haw! Sweet liberal tears!” They are brainwashed and unthinking, and when he gets frog-marched into Leavenworth, they’re going to burn the country down.

If they see it as rightful punishment, it will not.

AIUI the idea is that the people at the border were asking for it by trying to enter the nation illegally, or so the sentiment goes, and that they could have averted it by not coming it to the border.

Immigrants who legally apply for asylum at ports of entry are also being separated from their children.

That is hilarious!

Looked at Google News and there is a link to Fox News with a headline of “Willie Nelson says Christians should be outraged over separating families at border”. I decided to take a gander and the comments are what I expected:

Hey Willie, What about the crappie parents that would drag their children to the US border, cross over as now illegals and putting their children at risk of being separated from them. NO one wants children separated from their parents, but when stupid parents do stupid things, someone has to act in the interest of the children then their parents break the law. It happens everyday all across the country and no one seems concerned about the children except at the border. So what’s up with that?

Why should I be outraged that families are being separated at the border because some if not all of them are here illegally in the first place. They chose to break the law thus they chose this not us or anywhere else in America that are following the law. Sorry Willie you are a has been and need to fade away.

This Administration is NOT at fault here! It is the LAW that the Democrats instilled!!! Willie, I know you are a Democrat and that is ok, everyone has some kind of handicap!

And on and on and on. Bunch of vile, piece of shit deplorables.

As someone else pointed out elsewhere, in the unlikely event that Trump does get impeached and imprisoned, it probably won’t be a general prison alongside of thieves and murderers and rapists, but rather, a very comfy resort-like prison for VIPs.

This isn’t about turning the hard-core supporters (a lost cause IMHO), but about losing moderates who want the Party back.

[Riling Up the Base May Backfire on Trump](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/18/opinion/trump-base-midterms-moderate-republicans.html?partner=rss&emc=rss)

Opinion piece by a Democratic pollster. My bold.

> [@](#):
>
> …Mr. Trump’s base strategy brands the Republican Party as sexist, racist, xenophobic and anti-immigrant, which magnifies the anti-Trump reaction among Democrats. **But it also leaves a tenth who are conservative Catholics and a fifth who are nonreligious conservatives more tentative in their support of the Republican Party — and it pushes away the quarter of Republicans who remain ideologically moderate.** The harder the president bangs these drums, the more Democrats become enraged and a segment of Republicans gets demoralized. The more he trashes and defeats his Republican opponents in primaries, the more these voters may contemplate different political options.
>
> Mr. Trump also based his presidential candidacy first on gathering Tea Party support and then on forming an alliance with evangelicals and other religious conservatives. This alliance represented a clear majority among primary voters. The Republican establishment, however, thought that Mr. Trump would fade and also underestimated both the strength of his Tea Party base and his ability to win over evangelicals.
>
> …
>
> And then President Trump surprised nearly all political analysts with his decision to govern as a militant Tea Party and evangelical conservative and to make this the heart of his strategy for the midterm elections. Each provocation and each dog whistle — if we can even call them that anymore — make Democrats even more determined to vote and to register their rejection of Mr. Trump’s remade Republican Party.
>
> …
>
> **But each provocation also produces a reaction in the non-Trump remnant of the Republican Party, and that is the political reaction most observers are missing. Moderate Republicans are much more likely than the rest of the party to be college graduates, to favor abortion rights, to be relaxed about gay marriage and Planned Parenthood, and to believe that climate change is a human-created problem. They were feeling homeless in the Republican Party even before Mr. Trump’s triumph.**
>
> …
>
> Mr. Trump’s base strategy has allowed him to take over the Republican Party and to marginalize and defeat those who will not get with the program, but it has also unified Democrats around their values and created an opportunity for anti-Trump Americans to engage with these Republican voters, even (and especially) if Mr. Trump will not.
>
> It may be as straightforward as reminding them why the Trumpified Republican Party needs to be repudiated in November. They may be looking for a genuinely conservative party. But these voters may also be open to voting for Democrats.
>
> After all, a quarter of moderates did defect from Mr. Trump in 2016, and they might be ready to vote for candidates who respect women, who are angry about the N.R.A. and school shootings, who believe climate change is real and who want a government that works for the middle class at least as hard as it does for the privileged. It may seem as if Mr. Trump has taken over the Republican Party completely, but it is not too late for all of us to benefit from the struggle to deny him total control.

Another one that I don’t know exactly where to post. But I guess it comes under the heading of “unexpected and gratifying places where opposition is coming from.” Looks like Jeffy Beauregard is in danger of being excommunicated from the Methodists.
