# What Would YOU Do? \[Co-working napping on job\]

This has happened several times when I worked in a graveyard shift darkened CAD room back in the eighties and we always placed signs on their backs that said “Do not Disturb” and took pictures to post on the break wall. Generally we took the pictures down before the day shift guys came in, but we keep them because it met we owned you. Just about everyone did it at some point.

I don’t see how it’s none of the OP’s business if the co-worker is literally working for the same business. This would piss me off no end, and I’d engage the sleeper in annoying conversation to keep them awake, until they furnished me with a decent excuse. Which wouldn’t include ‘I need my healthful, mindful power-nap’ - unless I was working in the Google offices or somewhere similarly filled with precious, self-absorbed arseholes.
I admit the OP situation may have touched a nerve…

There was no option for Talk to her about it. I’ve known some people who had to take medication during the day that made them drowsy. One guy always came in an hour early because his knocked him out for about 45 minutes. She and her supervisor may have already worked this out in which case, if you bring it up, the reaction might be “What’s it to you?” But it wouldn’t hurt to just ask her. Could be she’s so young she doesn’t know there’s “no napping in baseball.” (To paraphrase.)

Yeah, unfortunately is seems most assume that when people fall asleep at work it’s on purpose. I also thought this, in my younger days, of a guy I used to work with who I would often see napping.
Then I developed sleep apnea. Even with treatment (CPAP), there are days when I simply lose the battle. I do not want to sleep, nor do I seek it. Sleep simply overpowers me.

A co-worker I knew used to catch shit for taking a 10 min max nap at his desk on occasion. To the point of threatening a write-up about it even. At a company where a large number of employees took regular multiple cigarette breaks every day. But no, one mustn’t be seen napping at one’s desk! :rolleyes:

If she were a more fortunate drone with an office door, you’d only know she was napping if her productivity somehow affected yours. Leave it alone. If it’s a problem, the people on her team will respond.

We have a pretty lax atmosphere, but sleeping at the office is a big no-no.
But I wouldn’t say anything, because lord knows I’ve caught a few moments of shut-eye myself.

Many years ago, I worked at a Ford dealership, in the parts department. A routine prank was to sneak up on an unsuspecting (preferably sleeping) victim and toss a hubcap onto the concrete floor right behind them. This was known as doing an ‘1104’ on someone, which was the main part number for a hubcap. Better than coffee! 😃

My beef with it would be them napping at their actual desk - I wouldn’t give a monkey’s if they went sleeping somewhere else on their break. I get annoyed enough at the woman who sits behind me at work and often has a large bowl of cereal with chopped fruit, at her desk while chatting away, first thing in the morning.
This may be the fabled ‘work-life balance’ we’re supposed to strive for, but if I’m slaving my bollocks off at Work, it’s off-putting having someone doing ostentatious ‘Life’ stuff right next to me.

Not really. The thread is “what would you do?”. There’s clearly an implication that this is a situation that one might reasonably do something about. If the thread was “Can ANYONE think of a good reason to give a shit about this?” then I’d agree that mine was an over reaction.
The fact that you’ve decided to ultimately do nothing makes you merely a busybody, instead of an insufferable busybody. It clearly bothered you so much you needed to start a discussion on the Internet about it. I didn’t mean to be insulting but I guess I can’t deny it’s “name calling”. Still, “a person who pries into or meddles in the affairs of others” seems pretty accurate to me.

I would take her aside and let her know that, even though she may be on break or lunch, sleeping at her desk looks unprofessional and may have a negative effect on her career. Why would anyone not share careeer advice with a young person?
