We’re here… we rented an apartment in Trastevere.
The Trevi fountain is not always packed, it just appears that way.
The most beautiful, nay, idyllic, moment I had in Rome was on our last day there. The girl and I woke up extra early and planned to walk over to the Pantheon to watch the sunrise. However, the Trevi was en route and it interrupted our plans. While everybody is correct that the Trevi is ridiculously crowded for the entire day, evening, and night, it is blissfully deserted first thing in the morning. As the sun was just breaking over Rome we sat down and enjoyed the Trevi with about six other people.
The best part was watching two city employees, being watched themselves by a policeman, cleaning the previous day’s haul from the Trevi. One guy was in hip-waders sweeping the coins underwater into massive piles. Then he’d sweep them up like you would dust and pour them into a bucket with small holes in it. Another employee would strain to pick up the bucket, let the water drain out, and then take it to a nearby waiting truck. Apparently the Trevi pulls in a few hundred Euro a day - all of which goes to local charities.
I’d love to go there, and maybe just Rome around for awhile!!!
So, how was your trip? What did you see? What was your favourite part?
Well, we spent 6 nights in Rome, then had a 12 night cruise around the Mediterranean, stopping in several places in Greece, as well as Turkey and Egypt. Then one more night in Rome. It was amazing, we saw so much… I don’t know if I have a favorite part, actually. Just walking around was amazing. I have written some in my journal, and plan on writing more in the next couple of days now that I have some breathing room and time.
