I know, I know, the days when stadiums were named after teams, local heroes, or geographic locations are over. There’s too much money to be made selling stadium naming rights to corporations. Still, if we WERE living in a less crassly commercial age, what would YOU name your favorite arenas? A few suggestions: 1. No matter what Pac Bell ends up being called, the Giants ought to be playing at Willie Mays Field. 2. Since PSI Net is belly up, the Ravens ought to be playing in Johnny Unitas Stadium. 3. When it was no longer feasible to keep the name Enron Field, the Astros had several viable options. They could have renamed their stadium after a sports hero with Houston ties, like Wyomia Tyus (an Olympic gold medallist, born and raised in Houston) or Earl Campbell. Or, better yet, they could have named it after a REAL “Astro” like Alan Shepard or John Glenn. Your suggestions? P.S. I know Ted Turner had the money, ego and legal right to name a stadium after himself… but if he had ANY class, the Braves would be playing in Henry Aaron Stadium. ---

How about the Pete Rose Gardens for Cincinnati Baseball, only mildly controverial. ---

Fortunately for this Royals fan (and I’ve got to cling to those few things a Royals fan can still be fortunate for), Kauffman Stadium is named just right. Ewing Kauffman was everything a baseball team owner should be. Some other thoughts: Pittsburgh Pirates should play in Honus Wagner Stadium. Pittsburgh Steelers should play in Steel Curtain Stadium. Philadelphia stadium should be called Independence Field or Liberty Bell Field. St. Louis Cardinals should be in Stan Musial Park (alternately, I’d accept Rogers Hornsby as well). San Diego Padres - Tony Gwynn Field. And on a lighter note, I think Shea Stadium (which is pretty aptly named already) should be renamed “The Toilet Bowl”, since it’s in Flushing. ---

Pig’s Eye Park, in honor of the smuggler & bootlegger who lived on an island in the middle of the Mississippi, and for whom the town of St. Paul was originally suggested to be named (wiser heads prevailed and pointed out that the Minnesota territory would have a hard time achieving statehood with a capitol city named “Pig’s Eye”, bootlegger or no bootlegger). ---

I’m not going to try to change your opinion of the Tedinator, but I would like to call your attention to the fact that they _did_ rename the street Turner Field is on so that it’s address could be 755 Hank Aaron Drive. ---
