What would you sacrifice your child for?

Nothing. Or the grandchildren, either. It’s not the same thing as God so loved the world, etc. etc. because God (presumably) knew Jesus would rise again on the third day. God *knew *Jesus IS god, too. We do not know that our child would live again, or be god. All we would know is that the child sacrificed would no longer be alive. And God did not even let Abraham sacrifice Isaac after he specifically ordered it, because he (again, presumably) *knew *it’s not the same thing. So, although there are things that I might choose to die for, there is nothing I would give my children’s lives for.

Being granted magical satanic powers. Really.

Can I question this premise? God wasn’t really “sacrificing” anything, because he knew his son would join him at his right hand in Heaven forever in 3 days. Mere mortals who sacrifice their children risk a hell of a lot more, being uncertain of the ultimate outcome. Abraham and Isaac would be a better comparison, and in modern eyes, old Abe comes off looking like a deranged schizophrenic hearing voices that tell him to kill his kid.

It’s every parents dream to outlive their child.
-Homer Simpson

Parents–they’re fucking craayyzay.

Honestly, killing is easy. Allowing the death of others through inaction is even easier. The **real ** tough question might be: how many people would you allow to suffer eternal agony to spare your child a premature death? The entire population of the world, past present and future?

Presumably that’s the kind of choice that God faced. Of course like others have pointed out, I agree that God’s “sacrifice” was more publicity stunt than selfless giving. He creates the problem, and expects us to be impressed when he swoops in with the solution. “Hey it’s great that you’re footing the bill for my medical treatment, lets just not forget that you’re the one who gave me this syphilis in the first place.”
