I know that recreational drugs have their fashions, like everything else, but I’ve known of none that have completely disappeared from common consciousness like Quaaludes have. What happened to them? I can’t think that people decided they were too dangerous or something - that’s never been a problem with other drugs. Sua ---

As the Wikipedia article mentions, in1984 methaqualone was classified as a Schedule 1 substance in the US, illegal to manufacture. ---

One possibility is that Quaaludes are considerably more difficult to manufacture than other illegal drugs, and you would need real pharmaceutical facilities to make them _en masse_.
