Once upon a time the expression “as rich as an Argentine” was the equivalent of “as rich as an oil sheik”. Get a few loony socialist governments in place like the Peron regime and the wealth disappears as fast as a snowflake in 100 degree weather.

Peron appeared in *response *to the loss of Argentina’s wealth.

By 1914 WWI had erupted and the country had stabilized its economy, still world markets came to a stall because of the war and money would not flow with its previous ease. The Panama Channel opening in 1914 contributed to the economic decline of Argentina and other Southern countries.

By 1920 Argentina enjoyed a certain economic stability, and was one of the top economies in the world. The 1929 crash was not a harsh downturn on the country who still saw its imports reduced from US$ 1,537 million to $561 million by 1932.

In 1930 the military overthrew the Radical government led by Irigoyen. Irigoyen was a statist that encouraged the development of Argentina.

A General from the Army called Felix Uriburu was sponsored by the elite class who viewed Yrigoyen’s policies with horror. These elites were against the state intervention of oil exploitation which was traditionally in hands of the British.

In 1933 a newly elected President, Agustin P. Justo, encouraged a second commercial agreement that was signed between Argentina and Great Britain. The treaty was more favourable to Britain than to Argentina: Meat would be sold at a third of its original price, and exported by means of British meat packers. On the other side, Argentina would pay reduced duties on any British import.

By 1939 with the outbreak of WWII, Argentina had slowed its economic development. A new political leader would make its appearance. Juan Domingo Peron and his followers would shape the country’s history for the next 75 years.
