What's a dishwater blonde?

This is dishwater blonde: http://www.thehairtrader.com/viewlisting~lid~259231.htm

It’s definitely blonde - calling it light brown would be a stretch. But a lot of the in-between shades are almost as much gray as either brown or blonde. The result is a duller look than a more yellow kind of blonde.

(PS: Am I the only one surprised to see people selling their hair online?)

This is close to what I imagine…

I call that golden brown. Or maybe dark blond.

Of course not. Do you suppose it was a redhead who coined the term “carrot top”? Because I sure don’t. No doubt someone looked at some dishwater, then glanced at Edna and said “Hey, this water is the color of your hair!” instead.

And that brings up another question of mine…

When did carrots turn the color red? I always thought they were orange. So when did orange become red, because the way I see it, red hair is usually orange!

Radishes!

Not that color, rather that overall quality – dirtyish, nondescript, lackluster.

Don’t ever get involved with dogs who are described as having blue coats – your head will explode. :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess for the same reason that brown and pink people are said to be black or white. FWIW, in French, red hair is described using a separate colour word - roux, not rouge (the word for  red).

When I dyed my hair bright red, I usually referred to it as “fire engine red” to emphasize that it wasn’t red hair red, but red stuff red.

I’m a Mr. Clean Dishwater Blonde. My hair used to be blonde. Then it started to change colors so that the older, sun-exposed parts were very blonde with the newer growth coming in darker. Then pattern baldness set in. Those years with hair were the best 16 (hair) years of my life and I didn’t use them to nearly as many girls as I should have.

“Light brown” is a color. Brown hair is a warmer shade, blonde is a cooler shade, but not necessarily lighter. More neutral.

So a dark blonde can actually be darker than a medium brown.

It’s a drab color, and I have noticed that while a lot of men fade to this color and leave it, most women do something to it.

The only reason someone would dye their hair that color is, they think it’s their natural color and are trying to go back to it.

What is the difference between dirty and dishwater blond?

A better question is why carrot top? The tops of carrots are green!

Anyway, there are definitely redheads who hair is orange, but a lot of us have hair that’s a lot closer to copper than orange. Three redheads in my family, and no one has ever described our hair as orange. I think it depends on whether the red is closer to blonde (orange) or brown (copper,) really, and that in and of itself might depend on the hair colors of their parents; lil bro and I both have hair a darker red than mom’s because dad’s got brown hair. But I digress.
