What's a dream holiday for someone who lives on an idyllic Pacific or Carribbean island?

One of my college was from Hawaii. She hated, hated, hated beaches, hot temperature and anything tropical. She liked ski resorts and shopping malls.

Truer than you might imagine!
We went to Hawaii five years ago, and whenever we would mention we were from Las Vegas, the locals would look at us amazed and say, “And you came here?!”
Apparently Las Vegas is the number one destination tourist attraction for Hawaiians and they found it odd that we would want to leave Las Vegas to come to Hawaii.
And it is quite true - there are lots and lots of Hawaiians who live here, and far more who visit regularly. There are daily non-stop flights from Hawaii to Las Vegas, and if you ever want to have that Hawaiian feel in Vegas, just go the the old California Hotel/Casino in the downtown area - that seems to be the hotel of choice for most visitors from the islands.

I often joke that when my former boss goes on vacation, he goes to places that are 10,000 feet above sea level, while I like to go places that are 1 foot above sea level.

I fancy places 40 feet under sea level myself.

Here in sunny Florida my dream holiday is somewhere in the hills from the low, pastoral hills of England through the rolling hills of Upstate New York all the way to the mountains of the Rockies. Anywhere but flat, hot, muggy Florida. I don’t have any interest in the Caribbean at all. Although I guess with the right girl and enough alcohol I wouldn’t mind a cruise. (In fact, forget the cruise!)

My second favourite advert ever.

A man is sitting in a pub, watching the barman pour a pint of [advertised beer]. The camera switches between the man (young, handsome, well-groomed and neatly turned out in smart casuals), the pub (dark wood, low beams) and the beer.

The only discordant note in all this is the soundtrack. Instead of pub noises, we have birdcalls and the occasional swishing sound.

As the pint is served, cut to a tropical beach scene; semicircular cove, pristine white sand verging clear blue water, with jungle inland. In the middle of the cove is a yacht.

Cut again to the deck of the yacht, where a tanned woman in a brief bikini carries a tall iced drink to a man sleeping on a hammock in the shade. He rouses, and we see it is the man in the pub.

The man sits up and takes the drink. “Thanks love,” he said.

“I’ve just had the most marvellous dream. There I was, in the pub, and the barman was pouring me a pint of beer…”

You can still get a sun burn there!

Last summer I spent a month on the island of Menorca. Met many locals… some of them called it Alcatraz… complaining they can’t ever leave. After awhile I began to understand. If I were to live in Europe I’d rather live in Barcelona or Paris and go to the island only for a getaway. Living on it would get boring.

I lived in Aceh, Indonesia for a little over 2 years. It’s not exactly tropical paradise, but there was a small island about an hour away that came close. Most weekends, we’d go there and sit on the beach with a beer and a book.

For vacations we would usually go to the city, either Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for shopping, eating out, movies, and museums.

I was born and raised in Hawaii. Rock fever, as it is called, hit in my 20s and I promptly moved to the Pacific Northwest. I wanted to live somewhere cooler, less hot and sunny, but still near the ocean. Never a landlocked state.

When you’re from a “paradise” or popular tourist location, you do not see it that way. You go to work, school, home, the bank, or shopping just like anyone else anywhere does. You know where the touristy places are and you generally stay away from them. (I never went to a Waikiki beach with the purpose of sunbathing and swimming until I was 32.)

Moreover, it’s not idyllic to you, because, well, it’s objectively not. Crime happens anywhere and everywhere. Hawaii feels the effects of shit weather and bad economies and high costs of living and most every bad thing everyone else sees.

What DMark said about Vegas for Hawaiians is accurate, though I’m not a huge fan of the place myself.

I do notice that a lot of us who’ve moved away will happily return to Hawaii to get married, but will honeymoon elsewhere.

I live in Antigua, West Indies. I don’t get rock fever. Like many people here we really enjoy where we live so why go anywhere else on holiday. It’s safe, it’s warm, it’s friendly, we’re **glad **when it rains, not much happens. A friend just got back from holiday in Denmark, his family stayed for six weeks, he was back after a week - wanted to spend his holiday at home diving and fishing and generally “liming” which is hanging out or having the craic **An Gadaí **

Caribbean people do go to New York, there are generally relatives there and England too or shopping in Puerto Rico. A Martinique friend once said to me, in Martinique I am a king - in France I am some black guy.

Ideal holiday for me would be a transatlantic crossing, or any long distance blue water sailing - an even smaller space!

*Takes note to arrange a houseswap holiday with **Bam Boo Gut **at some stage. *

My Timeshare in Key west has people who live in Hawaii coming over regularly.
