In college, we went camping a couple of times on [Indian Lake](http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24471.html) in the Adirondacks. Google Maps claims it’s about 1 hour 40 minutes from Albany Airport to the lake. The campsites are only accessible by boat and are all on one of the islands on the lake. (So it’s going to be purely tent camping, with an outhouse for a toilet.) Southwest flies to DC and St Louis, although the St Louis flights involve changing planes, perhaps at BWI. But the advantage of camping on an island on a lake is no bear danger. So one question is what level of rusticness are you looking for? Alternatively, Tripadvisor lists cabins for rent in the Adirondacks. I found one with four bedrooms and three bathrooms (capable of sleeping ten) for $350 per night on Schroon Lake. (That’s about 1 hour 20 minutes from Albany Airport, according to Google Maps.) ---

Very informative and even a cool picture of an apparently very rare (:dubious:) natural lake south of the glaciation line (Crater Lake, Oregon). ---

If I had to have a lakeside family reunion in the eastern US, I’d pick [Allegany State Park](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegany_State_Park). It’s close enough to services that you can get stuff if you really want to but not so close to services that everyone’s gonna be gone all the time 🙂 Hiking, swimming and other water activities, decently crafted buildings, cabins. When I last was there there was even a cheesy miniature golf course but cheesy minigolf courses are not for everyone 🙂 Actually, I have been to a family reunion there once, but I was so small I don’t remember anything except walking on the trail from the cabin. 1 1/2 hours from Buffalo airport, however.
