Same. But all 8 fingers record and “play back” = are recognized just fine and both my thumbs are total no-go: nearly impossible to record and if recorded, zero success at playback.
Color me just baffled at the clear dichotomy.

It seems the S24 has face unlock too (front camera recognizes your face). That might help if you can’t use your thumbs to unlock the phone.
It does. But it’s slow by comparison to pulling out the phone and having it unlocked before you can even see the screen. With a nod to Calvin: “Three seconds!?! Who’s got that kind of time!?!”
21st Century First World problems. Sheesh.
RF transparency. So metal isn’t a practical choice, and lots of people are snobbish about plastic. You could go with wood…
Wood would be really nice. But i liked textured plastic.
You might consider D-Brand skins for your phone. Some (all?) are textured. Basically a decal for your phone so it adds basically nothing to its size. (Make sure you are looking at skins for the phone you have.)
Thanks! I bought a product like that for some prior phones, but the company i bought it from didn’t have anything for the pixel 9.
Just bought one for my S24. Thanks.
I bought an AT&T phone two years ago and am reasonably happy with it. For all I know, it’s just a rebranded Samsung or something. Not the best camera, but works fine. I like that it used a C charger (reversible), and I like being able to disable security features (I keep NOTHING sensitive on my phone; banks, credit cards, etc.). The only issue I’ve had with it is that it thinks my daughter is the enemy. She can’t call me and I’ve tried everything. Also, my youngest son can’t text me. Weird glitches. But the price was right.
What that usually means is that in the course of rushing to answer the phone one time you tapped something inadvertently and have blocked their number.
Check your blocked number list in both the phone app and the texting app to see if they are on it.
Ugh, I would infinitely prefer a lighter, more durable plastic back than a silly piece of fragile crap that’s just going to be hidden by the $20 case anyway.
Aaaand that brings us back to the Pixel (A) series, where one of the reasons it’s cheaper is that it DOES have a “cheap” plastic back. So more win for me. A feature I totally don’t care about (high end material that’s covered by a case anyway) that results in lower costs for the ones I do (performance)? Win win win.
But yes, like others, I miss the rear fingerprint reader intensely. Just fit my hand and grip so very well.
Ahem
that’s just going to be hidden by the $20 plastic case anyway.
I got my wife’s cousin a Samsung Galaxy A14 earlier this year as he needed a phone. Perfectly reasonable budget phone for (at the time) 140 bucks or so. It’s served him perfectly well.
Definitely not a conspiracy theory, the manufacturers and cellphone networks absolutely manipulate the market to keep cell phone prices artificially high
“What’s a good low-cost cell phone?” and “What are the best cell phones?” are completely different questions.
As I mentioned, I’ve done all that. Neither of them are blocked.
Do they show in your call log even if your phone does not ring?
Are you sure they have the right number?
Are they gaslighting you?
I’m a weirdo, I guess. I have a OnePlus Nord N200. It’s a cheap Android phone and does what I need. I don’t care how much storage a phone has or what most of the apps are that it can run, because I am far-sighted. Even with my prescription reading glasses, staring at a cell phone screen for a long time gives me eye strain. I tend to use my tablet for getting on the internet or running apps. I mostly use my phone for calls, texts, Facebook messenger, and Spotify. I wouldn’t mind having a phone with a higher resolution camera. When I pull up the Nord’s photos on my computer, I can tell it does not take distance photos anywhere near as well as my wife’s Pixel. I do like its fingerprint sensor - it reads my thumbprint at the power button on the side.
I have a box of spare Nord 200 5g phones. I gave two away to my father and step mother, and still have 2 as backups. I’d agree that they’re fully functional phones, although I hate the OnePlus overlays and bloat with passion. But they do everything they have to, even if the version of Android is older than idea. So a fair low-cost phone, but not what I’d put in the “good” category, which tends to be filled with (for me at least) the $4-500 phones such as the Pixel (A) variants and the iPhone SE variants.
For my daughter, it rings once then goes directly to voice mail. And yes, they have the right number. My son’s messages just disappear into the corn field.
No, no lighting of gases.
