> **Snooopy** , I’m just amazed that you’d not heard of pickled eggs.

Indeed, I am a sheltered lad.

I’m not really big on pickled _anything_, really. Maybe the occasional dill pickle, but that’s about it.

They sell the big jars of pickled eggs at our local Smart and Final. If I ever get my house with the bar, I plan to buy a jar for decoration.

> I believe there was a pickled ear jar in Gangs of New York. Hell-Cat Maggie came into the bar and tossed one in a jar. Then got a mug of grog from the barkeep. Nice!

Several years ago, Playboy ran an article written by a chef to various Mafia heavies, complete with a couple of recipes. I remember the author mentioning that one guy kept a thumb that he had severed from someone in a pickle jar on the back of his bar as a memento. The spaghetti sauce that went with that story was pretty good.

> In the now-lost New York City episode (no longer syndicated because of the World Trade Tower scenes) the pickled egg jar was used early in the show to pick who would be the designated driver on St Patrick’s Day. Each person had to pick an egg and the person who got the black egg was “it”. As Moe explained, “just like they pick the pope.”

I keep hearing this, but it’s on, at least in Denver. I saw it within the last two weeks. Maybe it’s been pulled in some areas?

And if I’d read further,I’d see that others already adressed this.

> **diku** is right. The episode still airs. As I recall, it was removed from the repeat schedule for a while following 9/11, but it has definitely aired – with WTC references intact. I too have seen it.

Having never met a pickled egg in person, but having done the whol egg-left-in-vinagar thing in elementary school, I gotta ask-

Pickled eggs: shelled or unshelled?

Pickled eggs are peeled before pickling. Speaking of a “rubber egg” (whole egg soaked in vinegar for several weeks to remove the calcium from the shell), my mom was my Den Mother in Cub Scouts for awhile. We made a rubber egg and she was showing it to the rest of the den. One kid suggested she try bouncing it. She did and it did, maybe once, before breaking and spilling all over her coffee table.
