I’ve not seen the show or the movie on which it’s based, but in reading the various threads that have cropped up about the show’s fans, it seems entirely possible to me. There’s an “odd” slash subculture around the show which loathes any suggestions of changes to the way certain fans have constructed relationships between some of the characters (we’re talking, if you raise the subject at all you will be banned from the fansite, kind of loathing). So, yeah, I can see Buffy. And we all know what happened with the Trek religion. (Not to be confused with the First Church of Shatnerology.)
Geez, I’m such a straight dope geek.
When I read the subject line, I was all set to correct someone and say “His name is ‘Lukas’, not ‘Lucas’!”
:smack:
Carry on!
E3
Yeah, but he’s talking long term popularity, and Buffy has only been off the air for a year now. I don’t have any hard numbers, but I think it could be argued that Buffy was much more succesful in its initial run than Star Trek was during its initial run: longer run, higher social profile, succesful spin-off, greater critical success. Who knows how big it’ll be by 2025?
(Not very, if you ask me. Harry Potter will probably be the big cultural phenom everyone remembers from the turn of the century. Although, in a just universe, it should be Buffy.)
Who cares about the original trilogy: they’ve ordered a new season of Clone Wars, the cartoon!!!
5 new eps, each 12minutes long.
I’ll concede that it’s too early to tell for sure. Let’s give it 30 years and see if the franchise generates multiple movies, imitators, etc. as did Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord Of The Rings, and the Beatles.
I confess that part of my skepticism might be rooted in the fact that while I had personal involvement in the other examples, I’ve never seen Buffy. May be age related too – I don’t even know anyone who watched Buffy regularly. Hence my dubiousness.
And just to clarify, I’m not saying Buffy was poorly done. On the contrary, I understand it was a terrific show.
Heck, I’d say Buffy is well on its way. Beside a rabid (and huge) fan community, there are already Buffy novels, monster and episode guides, soundtracks, comics, video games, and upcoming animated series, etc. I think Buffy will continue to gain momentum just as Trek, Star Wars, and the rest did, especially when the inevitable movie based on the series gets made.
I agree completely, and was more or less trying to make the same point. Most of those franchises took a couple decades to become the culural juggernauts they are today. Of the new franchises that are contemporary, Buffy has a better shot at that sort of long term relevance than most others.
Woah, woah, woah there. while you folks are discussing Buffy this slipped on by!
Um… NEW Clone Wars? Cite? (please )
They’d better hurry up with production then, Ep3 is less than a year away! That said, it would be nice if the Clone wWars guys managed to tie the 'toon into the movie with some solid plotting. The cartoon has been very solid internally up to now, but I can’t help but feel it’s been kind’ve inconsequential to the upcoming movie.
And where’s my friggin Clone Wars DVD, dammit?
(and when Ep3’s over, it’d be nice to see some kinda of Boba Fett cartoon along the same lines. We see the orphaned clone growing up in a galaxy that is changing as fast as he is. What? A guy can dream, can’t he?
Okay, you’re very prescient, actually. Here’s confirmation of the Clone Wars cartoon.
But as for a young Boba Fett show - that is the plan. Possibly live action, though (not sure). It’s just rumour, and who knows may not get greenlit anyway, but it’s scheduled to be on TV sometime in 2005/6.
oh sweet, a Young Boba Fett Chronicles, a la Young Indiana Jones would be very cool indeed! I happened across a young Indie episode the other day and while there were some bluescreen shots that sucked very, very badly (a la The Rancor scene in ROTJ) the story was great and the FEEL was there.
Now, we just need to get Yoing Indie onto DVD!!! Dammit!
You guys aren’t alone.
They should be.
Sorry, couldn’t resist. I really don’t give a damn about Star Wars either way
