Ketchup or mustard? Me…it’s got to be mustard…preferably Gulden’s Spicy Brown. Sadly, my wife has my 4 year old son eating his with ketchup. Blecch! Might as well throw the damn thing away. Oh, and a little relish would be nice too. ---

Here in NYC, a good, brown, horseradishy mustard, and sauerkraut. When I visit Chicago, ALL that interesting shit they put on frankfurters out there. Bright yellow mustard, bright green relish, bright red peppers, chopped onion, celery salt, all that shit. When they say “What would you like on your hot dog, sir?” you say “ALL that shit, my good fellow, and plenty of it!” Chili is good, too. However, being intrinsically more interesting than a frank, the chili usually takes over the starring role. The hot dog becomes a base for the chili rather than the chili being a condiment to the hot dog. ---

Mustard, sauerkraut, onions, jalapenos. I’m finding it harder and harder to find sidewalk vendors who have sauerkraut for hot dogs. ---

Street vendor hot dogs? Urgh . . . I had one of those once, about 12 years ago. Reminded me of the theme song from “The Patty Duke Show.” That hot dog made me lose control . . . Me? Hebrew Nationals, cooked up with soy sauce, bacon bits and hot brown mustard. Ah likes 'em salty! ---

I’ve been told I’m sick, but I really love mustard and mayonnaise together. On burgers I get mustard, mayonnaise, pickles and (raw) onions. My husband loves me anyway. I think it goes back to my childhood and my obsession with deviled eggs. (But I’d really prefer polish sausage to hot dogs if I’m given a choice.) ---

I like my wiener hot n’ steamy. I enjoy shoving it between two firm, yet giving, warm buns. I wait for the buns to adhere slightly to the meat as to prevent wiener slippage. I wait until the perfect moment to apply the condoment of my choice. One must wait until the moment before consumption to apply the condoment (otherwise premature softening of the meat, and saturation of the buns may occur). I know I am in store for a good masticating experience when my wiener has been properly plumped, the buns are still firm, and the condoment begins to seep out of the bun. Wait, what am I talking about, I don’t eat hot dogs. ---
