I wouldn’t say I “got” a lot of good advice, but I’ve seen it given. The “nice guy” threads were spot on in telling the nice guys in question to buck up a little and stop being so passive-aggressive. I don’t suffer from Nice Guy Disease anymore, but I could have used these threads about 15 years ago. In that vein, a lot of threads deal with the end/impending end of the OP’s romantic relationship, and I have seen a lot of caring, poignant, wise advice given in those, up to and including “See a lawyer.” A lot of my book and movie choices have been based on the recommendations here, and I have yet to be disappointed. Once again, I could have used this message board about 15 to 20 years ago. It would have saved me a lot of heartache learning lessons the hard way. ---

It’s not so much “advice” as the epiphany that I am not nearly as smart as I thought I was. However, when I feel particularly cowed by some of the posters here, I go to the “Yahoo” boards, which usually makes me feel a lot better about myself. ---

Send the bunny around the tree TWICE when tying shoes. Unties easier than a double knot, and holds nearly as strong. My shoes used to untie all of the time. Now they never do, and my 5-year-old’s as well. ---

I got some great advice on how to hook up a router at home right here on the SDMB. It was great – I read the instructions, bought the stuff, and put it together. Zero problems! I love this place. ---

The best advice is the one you take to heart the most, and the one I received on this very board was: “Stop stressing about your mother’s feelings. It’s not your fault.” You know, I knew that, but for the first time, I realized what a self-demoralizing path i was on in regards to my mother. And it was all because some strangers on the Interner could see more clearly than me. ---

Hm, directly, I’ve gotten a lot of sympathy when I needed it a few years back. Indirectly, I’ve gotten great tips on music to listen to and books to read when lurking around in Cafe Society (which is how I spend most of my SDMB time these days). Knowing me, I’ve been helped out on a computer problem or three back in the day as well. ---

The best advice I got her at SDMB was the understanding that my living situtation was my choice alone, and that if I wanted to move, I could if I _really_ wanted to.
