# What's the best Granite Sealer?

We just installed granite vanity tops in our bathrooms. Now we need to seal them somehow, since I noticed that standing water actually darkens or gets absorbed by the granite.

Ideally, I’d like to seal them ONCE and never have to do it again. Second place would be a sealer that lasts for many years.

So I come to the Dope to get your advice and experience:

What sealer have you had experience with, good or bad?

What sealer would you recommend?

What are the pluses and minuses of that sealer?

Is this a DIY situation, or do I need to get it professionally done?

What do I absolutely need to know about sealing that I haven’t asked already?

The professionals I know just use the stuff you buy at Home Depot. If you want to spend more, get Dupont Bullet Proof. But there is no such thing as a sealer that works for life. You should reseal every few years, depending on how much use the counters get.

Water won’t permantly stain granite. It’s a rock. It may darken it initially if you let water stand on it for hours, but once it evaporates the darkening will go away.

I’m from the school of thought of not sealing the granite. We have it in all of our bathrooms, our kitchen, and on the floor in some places in the house. Even normal spills of wine, etc. if not left for hours will come up without leaving a permanent stain.

The sealants IMHO are a ripoff.
