if your flat screen tv was made in the past 7 years it has a digital tuner. all you need is an antenna.

Go on ebay or amazon marketplace and buy a used Tivo Series 3.
First, any rational person who doesn’t want to be a slave to the TV schedule needs a DVR.
Second, the Tivo will serve as your converter box.
Third, the Series 3 still came with component outputs, so you will be able to watch TV in high def.
