Larry Niven (SF author, talking about alien intelligences, but IMHO applies to human ones too):

_“There are minds out there that think as well, or better, than you do, but differently.”_

Probably not the cleverest thing _ever_, but it’s in my top ten.

Good old Calvin Coolidge -

A lady dinner guest approaches him and says “I bet my friend over there I could get you to say more than two words to me.”
Cal replied “You lose.”

That’s my vote too. For those who don’t know the whole exchange:

Lady Astor to Winston Churchill "Sir, if you were my husband, I’d poison you.”
Churchill: “Madam, if I were your husband, I’d take it!”

Gertrude Stein said of Oakland “There is no there _there_.” She also said “A rose is a rose is a rose” which I guess is a piss-take on Shakespeare’s “rose by any other name” business. Then there was Thoreau, when Emerson went to visit him in jail. When Emerson asked him what he was doing “in here”, Thoreau replied “What are you doing out there?”.

i think the robert louis stevenston one;

“It is better to travel hopefully then to arrive”

This is so true to so many things in life, and its so instant but you cant stop thinking about it and relating it to yourself, i also think the Churchill - i am drunk, you are ugly, in the morning i shall be sober - quote is so very funny, one of my history teachers favourites!

Has no-one mentioned churchill’s **much better** quote? It goes [something] like this…

Woman: If you were my husband I’d poison your tea.

Churchil : If you were my wife I’d drink it.

In terms of a single remark which led to near-unimaginable success, wealth, fame etc. it’s probably Lennon asking McCartney “Do you fancy joining my band?”.

Anyone who at a certain point in the late 70s said to their stockbroker “I have a hunch. Buy me all the Microsoft stock you can”.

More historically, Alexander Graham-Bell asking his assistant to come into the room, via his new invention, is probably a good choice for ‘cleverest’ thing ever said, in terms of what it took to be able to say it.

For wit, I’m glad Dorothy Parker has won a few nominations. Another woman once held open a door for her, ushering her through with the remark ‘Age before beauty’. Parker walked through, replying ‘Pearls before swine’.

E=mc2 is probably another strong contender.

In my opinion, some of these candidates submitted are signficantly off the mark. Clever is not the same as true, or groundbreaking, or inspiring, or wise. To me, Gilbert and Sullivan and Weird Al are clever songwriters. Douglas Adams and Mark Twain are clever authors. Winston Churchill is a clever conversationalist. And I admire them all for this reason. But if I’m looking for meaningful quotes, I won’t go to their works.

The thing about Rene Descartes and “I think, therefore I am” is where I got my message board Name.

As for the most clever quote? I don’t know who said it, but:

“Everyone wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.”

(the one in my sig is cool, too, but not exactly clever)

**Groucho Marx** once said: “I wouldn’t join a club that would have me as a member”.

Years ago I worked at a retail store and a man approached me and asked: “Do you know where I can find some barber scissors?” to which I replied, “Not off the top of my head”. To be honest it was just a gut reply (not really meaning to be clever) but we both had a good laugh.

I have heard that Oscar Wilde’s last words were:
“Either that wallpaper goes or I do.”

And, hoping that doper **jjim** doesn’t think I am stalking him, he had one line on the SDMB that still cracks me up.
The OP was “A line to kill a story”

**jjim** wrote:
“Hi Godot.”

Maybe you had to be there.
