What's the deal with agnosticism, anyway?

Sorry, I don’t really know what believing in a probability means. That’s more a statement of knowledge than belief. Following commandments might be evidence for someone else that a person is a theist, but it does not mean that they are one. They may feel forced into this by social pressure. Certainly all atheists follow some commandments, but not because a god exists. If they follow as a result of believing in a god, then they are a theist. If they follow to hide being an atheist, then they are not.

Agnostic definition from dictionary.com:
1.
a. One who believes that it is impossible to know whether there is a God.
b. One who is skeptical about the existence of God but does not profess true atheism.

This is why I hate debating the definition of words. We each have meaning we wish to express and we are limited by the words available. I call myself agnostic…but only in the sense of the second definition above. Some of you want to call me an athiest. Some want to call me a “weak athiest”. The OP was asking does it make sense to call a type1a agnostic an athiest.

Many people here want to call both types of agnostic an athiest.

There are certain things in life that are not binary: namely everything outside the realm of symbolic logic. A persons feelings and beliefs about God are certainly one such subject.

So you either must be an athiest or a thiest huh?

you either believe in God or you don’t believe in God?

What if a person has never heard the word God before? Do you call them an athiest?
Do you call a person who is a devout Hindu, Buddhist, or devoted follower of any non Christian religion an athiest? Suppose they have never heard a thing about Christianity and have no clue what you mean by the word “God”.

You either believe in God or you don’t? I believe you cannot tell me clearly what the heck you mean by the word “God”, so how can I tell you whether I believe in it or not. And if you can very neatly and clearly define what you mean by the word “God” I am pretty sure I will confidently be able to say I don’t believe in that.

If God is anything, She is something well beyond easy definition…something well beyond being easily summed up in few alphanumeric characters. God is unseen and beyond definition. Yet we like to pretend when one person says the word “God” they are refering to the same thing that another person is refering to when they say “God”? How can we know? We can’t know…one can hope…but God is ineffable and mysterious and a mind boggling idea.

Do you believe in God? It is a narrow simplistic question about an infinite and undefineable subject. To believe there are only two possible responses to this question for all people, either yes or no, is just as grossly simplistic.
