I’ve been in love with horses for years, and finally got my own. Whenever I get a boyfriend, I tell them that the horse will tak etop priority over them, and the horse will get more attention that them, if the 2 of them are together. horses still love you no matter what youve done wrong that day. and they let you cry into them, and they will nuzzle you and tell you that its alright. thats why girls love them. also, many of the top riders in the world are women, so it proabably also gives girls a good role model in life ---

As a girl, I rode at every opportunity, biking 5 miles to a friend’s home, where she kept ponies. Mostly I didn’t even get together with the girl, I’d just catch a pony and go riding. I was a very, very small child (I wore the same child’s size 4 school uniform from 3rd through 7th grade), but I could control a pony. I would pack a picnic and a book, catch a pony and ride bareback until I found were I wanted to have my lunch. I was too small to lift the saddle on the pony’s back. To me, horses epitomized grace strength and freedom, all of which I was lacking. And I was good at it! Also, I’ve always had a report with all animals, and this was just an extension of that. I used babysitting money to buy riding lessons, and as an adult bought my first horse, a trakehner, over 16hh. She died in foal, and I now own a 5 yr old thoroughbred gelding. My horses come when I whistle, behave far better for me than for anyone else. They are special. I never outgrew the horsey stage, or the love of animals. I wish I could have horses… I love them and maybe would like to own a ranch someday… the time I went riding for a few days was one of the best times in my life. The funny thing is though that I never was into horses a girl I only got interested in them more recently. Mainly what I liked when I was younger was dinosaurs. I used to be able to name off a bunch of them and talk about most of them and stuff like that. I even got gold for the grade 4 science fair on my thing about dinos. ---

Cool, my story is similar to yours, I rode my bike to the stables where I worked feeding and getting the lesson horses ready in exchange for riding lessons. I envy your way with links, **Bosicbo**. 🙂 I’ve had Irish since he was a yearling and have trained him myself. He’s very sweet and inquisitive. My old mare died at almost 11 months along. She had cancer, melenoma, and we were trying to keep her alive long enough to take the baby by C-section. She went into labour a couple weeks early when we weren’t ready, and went down. By the time the vet got there the baby was dead and stuck. There was no alternative but to put her down. It was very hard to lose them both after struggling so long to keep her going. I have trained in dressage, but don’t show. I can’t afford to keep my horse and train and show. StG ---

That is sad, **StGermain** , about your mare. That must of been hard with her so far along :(. I’ve never bred Pepper, I have to board her and was never in a position where I could afford to keep more than one horse. I would love to get a younger horse, but I’m afraid that will have to wait until I buy some land. Soon, I hope. Horses are totally addicting, but they sure are expensive! ---

The closest I ever got to dinos though was the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller and some of the dinos used in Jurassic Park when they were at the Alberta Museum. I got to look into a T-rex’s mouth… and I’m still here to tell about it! ---

I’ll go with **Edlyn** on this one. Riding a horse is like few other forms of recreation. The only thing that remotely approaches it is riding a really fine bicycle. I have never been able to fully dismiss the feeling of a horse as a “hayburner”, but when you ride one there is a common bond like few others. You must work with the animal to maximize your own fun. The low impact of noise and pollution combined with the ability to go places few vehicles can travel to, make horses just that much more special. Any rider here will tell you how soothing the clip-clop of horse hooves are as you head down a trail. The extra height lets you see bird nests and all sorts of other things that you would normally pass right by. I suppose that there is an extra measure of hilarity watching greenhorns deal with being on horseback. I once organized an overnight ride out for sixteen people near Half Moon Bay on the California coast. The next morning it was hard not to double over laughing at all of the Silicon Valley city slickers walking bow legged to the truck for a lift up the hill because they were too sore to ride back to the barn. Ride a horse? Any time. Just put one under me and I’m happy as a clam. As for all of the Unicorn stuff, I’ll say this much. I once lived with the founder of the Save The Unicorns Foundation and she used to call me _her unicorn_. But that’s another story entirely. ---

I went to school in Lexington, KY for five years and managed to never go to Keeneland once! I grew up in Louisville, KY and I have been to Churchill Downs but once (and that one time, I wasn’t there to watch a race). But I find horse racing to be pretty dull – it’s over too quickly. ---
