# What's the difference between Streusel and Strudel?

Well, Streusel is the thing on top of [this cake](http://www.geocities.co.jp/Foodpia/6377/140501_2.jpg) (Streuselkuchen), while Strudel is the name for [this dessert](http://recipesbycindy.homestead.com/files/apfelstrudel.jpg).

Streuselkuchen as well as Strudel come in all kinds of fruity varieties. Mmmm…Apfelstrudel.

Schnitzel with noodles?

[Schnitzel](http://www.qedata.se/bilder/galleri/wien-schnitzel.jpg) usually comes with fries, unless it’s a Jägerschnitzel. In that case it has mushroom sauce on top and might come with [Spätzle](http://www.single-kochbuch.de/fotos/spaetzle.jpg) which I guess are noodles, but only technically speaking.

Streusel is a topping, made with butter (or other fat), flour, sugar, and spices.

Strudel is a pastry, made with thin sheets of pastry and usually with a fruit filling.

Schnitzel is a cutlet cooked in a coating, like Weiner Schnitzel is a veal cutlet coated with flour and spices, then fried.

I was kidding about the Schnitzel. Just tossed that in because of the song. (John Coltrane, you rule.) I had Wienerschnitzel once when I was a kid but now I’m vegetarian.

Now if only someone could explain the difference between _blintz_ and _blini_.

Or _kugel_ and Koogle™.

**Blini** are small pancakes, not much bigger than an old Eisenhower silver dollar, that serve as a perch for caviar (and less rarified hors d’oevres).

**Blintzes** are essentially crepes - much thinner than blini - that are filled with sweetened cheese (sometimes savory fillings, too), rolled up, fried again, and served with jam.
