That’s it. Supply chain issues can be crazy but were particularly crazy then. The costs of delaying some construction project were way higher than the cost of shipping the bricks on time.

I was a manufacturing engineer for 30 years and I have experienced and heard some crazy stories. One I was told was having a smallish bag of a very specific type of screw helicoptered into the parking lot every evening.

There’s a fellow in my town who does mobile oil changes. Comes to you house or work and changes oil and filters. I believe he does cabin air filters as well. Also tire rotations.

I’ve hired him to change tires/wheels in spring and fall as it’s somewhat hard for me to handle.

Ooh, I would love it if someone would come to my house to swap summer and winter tires (around here, some people call that “flopping”). I hate hauling out the old set from the shed, loading up the tires into the car (they’re heavy!), leaving my car at a shop for the day, then dragging them back to the shed. If someone would take over that job I’d be extremely grateful.

He charges $30. We drive to my pole barn and use his jack as well as one of mine so as to do front and rear at the same time. I consider it a good deal.

If I went to a station to do it I’d have to load four tires on wheels into the vehicle and It would be a tight fit.

I once tried to explain that I did NOT want two pizzas.
Just make me one pizza, okay, kid?
I’ll pay the usual price, 'cause I know you can’t control that and you have to charge what’s written on the menu.
But I want to eat ONE pizza.
I’m eating by myself, I can’t finish two pizzas, (and re-warmed, day-old pizza is disgusting.)

Hey, let’s try this again, okay, kid?
I want ONE pizza. You are alone in the store right now, there’s no manager nearby. It is LESS work for you to make one pizza than two pizzas.
Can you please make ONE pizza? Huh, kid? Do you understand the concept of “one”?

Nope.

I got handed a long box with two pizzas inside.

>
> Crazy inventors greatly understimate the amount of work it takes to get something from a concept to a finished product.

And that’s an interesting side-topic I think.

Many of us think we have good ideas that can improve the world if not make fat stacks. And there should be no shame in having such ideas even if they are not actually workable in practice.

The shame comes from:
1: Self-delusion; where a person is investing time and money into something while having a massively unrealistic appreciation of how likely it is to be completed successfully or to turn a profit.
2: Being psychologically invested. What I mean is: where someone has a dream of doing something, and even though they do little to advance the dream, the thought of it prevents them from fully committing to other, much better, opportunities in life.

Maybe _that’s_ the business idea: some kind of incubator + therapy, where you give people a serious chance to actually try to implement a dream, and then _let go of it_ when (as in most cases) they find it is not quite the slam dunk they thought it was.
Like a Shark Tank / Dragon’s Den but with more explanation. 😀

TIL.

CLOP (all uppercase) was US Navy slang back in the 1980s, and perhaps before.

“Clop” (mixed case) sounds comedically horrifying. Not sure I want to go searching. But that wiki article led to this one which is also horrifyingly lame.

wasn’t there a british hairdresser (?) who invented a incredibly good thermal isolation, he made it into some TV-shows with it (protecting a raw egg by 1cm of isolation vs. a gas burner) … and he could never get it off the end of the runway … and died taking the formula into the grave …

yes, IMHE, good ideas are about 5-10% of a smash-hit (rest being transpiration and luck) … and I blame hollywood for making us believe we just need a good idea and that’s it - instant millionaire!.
