> Once, during a _long_ descent (5+ miles) on a recumbent in rural Vermont, i looked down and saw my computer read 63 mph. I don’t think i’d wanna do this on a standard diamond frame bike.

> I hit about 48 mph going down a hill on the ms150 from Houston to Austin. It was the most fun I’ve ever had. Unfortuantly, the previos year, my friend’s bike ended up in a tree, and he was at the bottom of the hill—with a broken collar bone. Ouch!! It’s good to know that their are cycling fans on the SDMB!

So by complete coincidence, my top speed in my life (according to my cycle computer) was on a diamond-frame Peugeot 12-speed (which is still in my basement) back in 1987 on a long 2+ mile downhill stretch in Texas hill country on the MS150 from Houston to Austin.

I hit 63 mph.

At some point, I realized I would likely be killed or seriously injured if I fell so I held on tight for dear life.

My original goal was to save pedaling on the next uphill slope. I made it about halfway up the next hill.

BTW, this old thread popped up as a “similar thread” for me while starting a new thread. I guess I missed it because it was started a month before I joined 26 years ago. But reading these two posts, I was compelled to chime in. Better late than never. 😉
