I saw the most bizarre/gross thing I’ve ever seen on the MTV show Jackass. I was flipping channels and I saw what I though was some sort of backyard cooking show. The “chef” was making an omelette. He did this by eating all of the raw ingredients, eggs included, and then vomiting them into a hot frying pan. After that, he proceeded to re-eat it.

> **Annie** thanks for reminding me. I was 24 and although I didn’t think of it as weird, it is by far the most remarkable thing that probably has ever been seen on TV. Now that you got me going there was the day in July, 1969 that we watched Neil Armstrong step onto the moon. \*\*

What’s strange is most people my age, who grew up with the space program, didn’t see the moon landing as anything spectactular. We had always been going into space. It just seemed inevitable that someday we would get there.

I wish I had been older when Kennedy died. The true impsact of it never really hit me. At 8 years old, for all I knew the whole thing was a common experience.

The moon landing wasn’t all that impressive. Black and white shadows that look more like shadow puppets. Kubrick did space better in ‘2001.’ 😃

I was watching one of those shows where you send in your home video balls-ups in return for £250 cash. One particular clip was of a man and woman cleaning out the elephant enclosure at a zoo.

So, the man is standing behind the elephant, when the woman decides it would be funny to hose him down. He tries to dodge the water, stumbles, and ends up falling head-first towards the elephant. You can guess what happens next… his head ends up literally INSIDE the elephant’s arse. After a few seconds of wriggling, he manages to pull out again, with his head and face covered in plop.

Hmmmmmmmm, nice. But at least he got to know what the inside of an elephant’s arse looks like, and there aren’t many people who can say that.

Ok, after many, many months I’m finally delurking (or is it unlurking?)

The most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen on TV was Dr. Gene Scott spanking his monkey for over 20 minutes.

Some explanation: Gene Scott is a TV preacher based in Southern California who used to own a small UHF station (Channel 30) in So. Cal. I believe the station transmits from San Bernadino, but you can get it all over Los Angeles. Anyway, back in the early 1980s, the FCC wanted to see his finance books, he refused, so the FCC yanked his license.

This triggered an amazing transformation in the good preacher. He went from being some boring guy in a suit standing in front of a painting of a waterfall whose station you pass by on the way to Lucha Libre on Channel 34 to a leather jacket-clad, cigar-chomping, bug-eyed sunglass-wearing, Kaiser-helmet-sporting raving maniac. He announced that unlike fundamentalists, he believed in evolution, because FCC bureaucrats were the missing link. “They ain’t human!!”

A new feature of the show was the All-Star FCC Bureaucrat Band, which consisted of a table crammed with wind-up monkeys. He had the cymbal-crashers, the crouch-and-flip gorillas, you name it. The camera would zoom in on a plastic primate, Gene would take out a huge stick with a plastic clenched fist mounted to the end, and begin pounding the monkey on the head. Phone bank workers would cheer and shout stuff like “Hit him again, Doc!!” Then the camera would pan to another poor chimp, and the beating cycle would repeat. This would go on for about 20 minutes. A couple of my friends gathered together for his final broadcast, where he presented certificate #666 to the FCC, beat his monkeys up until midnight, when he went off the air in mid-rant.

Afterwards he was buying time on other stations and the ranting and entertaining stuff continued for another year or two. Then he recovered, and now he’s boring again. But from 1983-1985, he was easily the most entertaining “what-the-hell-I-am-watching-is-this-for-real” show on TV.
