Michael Moorcock hated it, but I still enjoy The Final Programme (American title: Last Days of Man on Earth). Quite a cast, too. Jon Finch made a great Jerry Cornelius.
Not sure, but I think the article was reprinted in Ellison’s collection of film reviews, Harlan Ellison’s Watching.
I kind of enjoyed the film, despite its plot holes and scientific errors. Steranko did a good comic book adaptation of it in Heavy Metal at the time.
If it was, it’s not listed in the internet speculation fiction database page that I linked to. That’s not their sort of lapse.
If it’s there, though, have a look. It’s always fun to watch Ellison in action. And for all my love of Peter Hyams, I think Ellison is pretty spot-on here. “High Noon in Space” doesn’t really work, on a LOT of levels.
I wholeheartedly agree this was an underrated film. I particularly enjoyed how the film depicted the various psychological stages the protagonist went through as he learned (or thought) he was the last man alive on earth.
BTW, Thanks to all the great suggestions. Over the past few nights I’ve been digging up a lot of these movies to watch. Just watched Moon last night and thought it was great! Also, Time after time I probably haven’t seen in 30 years, but it holds up quit well. Although McDowell looked too young to play Wells. He just looked too much like Alex from Clockwork Orange with a bad hairpiece and stash! But really well acted of course.
I am casting a vote for Primer. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/?ref_=nv_sr_1
