What's the name of a really good tequila?

I’ve got some of that. It’s good booze, but you’re mainly paying for the fancy packaging.

Herradura, Hacienda del Cristero, or as pulykamell has mentioned, El Jimador are really nice tequilas.

It’s the amount of distilled agave that gives the depth and smoothness of taste.

A minimum of 51% is what it takes to legally be tequila; so for volume, the rest can be made up of a cheaper cane spirit. This is the difference between a mixto, and 100 per cent agave - where in Mexico, it is said that 10 years of Mexican sunshine awaits in every drop.

Herradura reposado is a really nice sipping tequila that still lets you excel at the Mexican Hat Dance vertically and horizontally. Olé!

As I once heard someone say (here maybe), referring to anejo tequila…if I want to taste the barrel…I’ll drink whiskey.
Obviously, it all comes down to taste. I’d rather have a blanco then a anejo, for the same reason that I don’t drink whiskey.

Any chance anyone can recommend a good tequila I can acquire in England for a reasonable price?

Shipping over from America just doesn’t make me thirsty.

I can believe that. I have no idea what it costs, as I’ve never purchased it. I did enjoy it the time I had it.

Another tequila I like, but isn’t terribly pricey, is Arette. I bought Semental & Frida Kahlo tequilas once, when they were on sale in a local store. I thought they were decent, but have mostly become my mixers, as I wasn’t a huge fan of either straight.

Personally, I tend to like reposado tequilas the best, though the Casa Noble blanco was quite nice.

Back when we just started dating, my now-husband’s parents sent him a bottle of Corazon blanco. Also decent, but not my favorite.

Any of the names in the thread ring a bell for you, Canvas Shoes?

Jose Cuervo Reservada Anejo. Awesome sipping tequila. In the states it cost me $120, but it was $80 at the Cancun airport. Only bring it out on special occaisions, lasts just about a year.

I just remembered that it was Herradura Silver, not Jose Cuervo. :smack:

Forgive me - it has been twenty-plus years since I regularly made margaritas. (BTW, fresh-squeezed limes and Triple Sec are the other ingredients. On the rocks, no salt.)

Jose Gold shots, with or without salt and lime, was the stuff I got crazy on.

I disagree with posters saying the tequilla doesn’t matter in a margarita. Patron tastes better straight, on the rocks, or in a margarita than lower quality tequilla. The best part is that patron doesn’t cost very much more compared to more inferior brands like Jose Cuervo.

I agree that a margarita made with a higher quality tequila is a better-tasting margarita, however I would also say that you can get away with using a lower quality tequila in a margarita and still have a good-tasting margarita. So yes, it matters, but it doesn’t matter as much as if you’re drinking the tequila straight.

El Tesoro anejo always works for me.
