What's the rule with funeral processions?

In coffinman’s “Ask the Funeral Director” thread, I believe he said that processions running red lights without police escort is a bad idea.

If you see a funeral procession, then yes you should let them go ahead. But if you don’t even see them till the last minute, I don’t see the big deal. There’s nothing sacred about a bunch of cars running red lights. Flipping someone the bird for not screeching to a halt–well that dude needs some perspective. And a map to the cemetery.

I discourage processionals as I think they are unnecessary and hazardous on many levels.

I do always produce and provide maps to everyone and encourage that they drive on their own safely to the next destination.

And a point of safety: a processional should have at least 1 motorcycle escort for every 5 cars. At no time should any mourners think that blowing red lights without a professional team of motorcycle escorts providing coverage and supervision is acceptable or safe in any way.
