What's the scam here?

Let him know that you are interested in buying two tractors if he can find another one. If he says he can, tell him you can buy all the tractors he can find. Keep raising the stakes and tell him you need to pay in cash to avoid taxes. Tell him you’ll meet him in Canada, but then when you are supposed to meet tell him you have trouble crossing the border, that you’re in a border town and he can come down and pick up the money and sign a bill of sale, but you don’t have much time left, and he has to hurry. Have some friends come with you for the meet, and take everything he has on him. Which may be nothing more than just his clothes, and a cell phone. Use his cell phone to make calls to Pakistan, keep asking for the Taliban headquarters, then toss it in the river.

I sent that email - his response is in post #14, above: Tractor can’t be seen because there’s no one to show it.

Ahhh, missed that.
I know you’re planning to just drop it, and I don’t blame you, but I’d probably mess around with him at this point. Maybe telling him if there’s anyway he can arrange a ‘viewing’ I’ll pay an extra $1000 for his trouble. I’d perhaps even give some stupid reason for doing this. Something about this tractor I need to see before I can make the purchase, just to see if he would try to arrange for me to see A tractor. “That model year had two different wiring harnesses for the secondary column depending on which plant they where manufactured in. I just need to walk around it and see if it yours has the “C Harness” or the “C3 Harness”. Once I confirm which one it is, I’ll send you the payment and take delivery. But if it’s the wrong one, I don’t want to waste my time as it won’t be compatible with my other machines. Like I said before, if you can arrange for someone to let me see if, I can give you an additional $1000, but otherwise there’s no deal as I can just buy a different one. Please to let me no your decesion.”

Well, I’ve already asked him:

  • How many hours are on the tractor
  • What type of tires it has (there are 3 common styles)
  • Serial number

He has made no reply to these questions.

I’m confident that he’ll:

  • Ignore an inconvenient question, or
  • Make up a response, or
  • Stop sending emails

When are you done with law school? Your humor is sorely missed these days.

A google of;
“all my options and I came to the conclusion that the safest way to do this deal is using the service of eBay, that can give us both the safety and the guarantee necessary to end the transaction in a”

brings up seven hits of ads like this. I blame the schools. Once scamsters would hand-craft their patter. Now it is all volume.

They also used to send them via fax machines with wardialers.
