Elvis on black velvet.
I considered that, but I’m guessing a lot of people my generation and younger wouldn’t be familiar with it. I first learned of it from the Weird Al song, “Velvet Elvis.” Also, there appears to be no one specific iconic “Velvet Elvis” painting, is there?
Well, there are four original versions of The Scream (plus one run of lithographs) and nobody’s disqualifying it… ![]()
Yes, I was joking about the art cognoscenti part of my prediction. Dogs Playing Poker is a real contender, I agree.
Hell, there are two versions of Mona Lisa!
Magritte could be a future winner as some soon-to-be-famous paintings in private collections (La colère des dieux comes to mind) are bought for record sums by museums. Both The Son of Man and The Treachery Of Images kinda have to be taken as part of larger series of similar works. They’ll never win “famous named” category, and if they did, the confusion between different paintings, (like Hokusai’s multiple prints) are a bit of a cheat.
That said, because of famous artworks primary use as financial instruments, even the first most famous painting has potential doubles.
Not in time to add: d’oh :smack: silenus just mentioned it!
I’d never heard of it, and on Googling it, I don’t recognize it.
One point in favour of Starry Night over, say, The Last Supper in terms of public awareness- does the latter feature in any easy listening classics? I know *technically *the song is called Vincent, but many people know it best as Starry, Starry Night.
Ok, now we’re definitely into this territory. I have never seen this painting before, and I have never heard of the artist.
Well, a while back, for about 15 minutes, this was probably the most famous painting:
Durer’s Praying Hands drawing is very recognizable, although most people don’t know the artist
Fixed link. (And hah!)
Fixed link. (Don’t recognize that one at all.)
Wikipedia puts a helpful “…did you mean [link with terminal close bracket]” every time this happens. You’d think they might as well just redirect.
Hah. I didn’t even notice that. Yeah, you’d think if 99% of the url matches except for a common formatting misstep, it’d just go ahead and assume what you meant.
I wonder about this too - while I think a great many people might recognize the image of the Creation of Adam, I wonder how many of them know its name and who painted it.
Starry Night is the painting that came to mind before I opened the thread, and I would think most people who recognize the painting also know its name and painter.
I’ve first seen “American Gothic” in the Rocky Horror Picture Show and didn’t even understand then that the picture they were parodying was an important piece of art. I only learned that much later.
Trump crosses the swamp
Absolutely Marvelous! Can’t deny the talent and creative flare behind these works.
