Gotcha. Thanks!
What I did then would get me arrested now… back in the late 1970s I worked at a gas station. I was pump jockey/apprentice mechanic. Anytime a car came in needing any cooling system repair it was my job to drain the cooling system… and I did. Right into the sewer out back. Every Sunday, scrub the oily work bay floors, hose it all down right out into the street. Brakes? Remove the wheels and use pressurized air to blow off all the asbestos dust. This was all SOP back in the day.
What goes on tour stays on tour
I worked for a company that designed and built machinery. The owner was trying to sell a line of machinery to GM. He set up a new company name and had all the components for the test machine delivered to a building he rented down the street. When the machine did not work as advertised he declared bankruptcy for the dummy company and stiffed all the companies that provided the components.
I worked in an orange grove as a teenager. It was very shady in the daytime, but I was working at night as a smudger. Horrible job, but good money, but no shade.
I’ve related this before. One summer during cégep I went to work as a telemarketer, in what it took me much too long afterward to realize was a scam (we were selling “business directories,” pretending that the company had a listing and asking them to renew it).
It was pathetic how much I wanted the job – I wore a suit to work for the first week or two – and it was just awful, to the point where I was taking bathroom breaks (strictly rationed at five minutes each) just to not be on the phone and to cry.
I was immensely satisfied some time later when I heard they had gotten busted.
I worked as a construction laborer one summer in college. I thought it was kind of weird when I had union dues deducted from my paycheck, but never got a union card or an invite to a meeting. But I was a naive kid and just wanted to make money, so I paid it little heed. Later I found out that various officers of the local were charged with sundry crimes including corruption and racketeering. No idea whether I was an unwitting participant in the crimes.
