Snails. When I was traveling in Mexico, we came to this lake that was famous for having lots of snails living in it. We dove in the shallow water and collected a bunch of them, boiled them in a pot to remove the shells, and then mixed them with pico de gallo.

They have a very rubbery texture which is kind of gross. I won’t be eating snails again.

Another odd taste sensation: Nanjing-style duck blood & vermicelli soup. My wife likes it, but it’s not for me, frankly.

Indian restaurant.

I go there once in a while, it’s pretty decent. But I was always intrigued by this mysterious little bowl of pickled looking things.

So I tried them.

One bite - I immediately spit them out. Friends asked, “Was it bad? Was it disgusting? What was it?!”

Well, no, it wasn’t bad. It didn’t taste disgusting, per se. But it was just so completely outside anything I had ever tasted before.

I’m still not sure what this stuff is. It does have a taste of (among many other things) pickling, which is to say vinegar. But it’s just so damn strong, and there are strong flavors of other things that I still haven’t identified. Mint? I dunno. I should probably just ask the proprietor, but I haven’t been there in a few months.

Butterfinger milk.

Milk, packaged in little cartons like chocolate milk, but Butterfinger-flavored.

I’ve tried it every time I’ve run across it because I cannot get over the taste.

It’s not good.

It’s not bad.

It in fact tastes like Butterfinger.

And my brain just can’t wrap around that in milk form, for some reason. 😛
It’s a total disconnect.

Oh, and I learned to tolerate green peppers in high school because of a friend of mine.

Her mom \<and mine\> re-used baggies for school lunches. Why waste them, right?
Putting chocolate fudge into bags that had previously held sliced green peppers creates…an actually interesting flavor!

I tried durian cake before. Not the weirdest thing I had, but it was _blech_. Worse than straight up durian.

> As long as we’re discussing the delights of the Orient, stinky tofu isn’t all that weird, except for the part where you’re chewing it VERY quickly and trying to figure out why anyone would want to eat something that tastes exactly like what dog shit smells like.

Yeah, stinky tofu isn’t weird. It’s mostly just the smell. It doesn’t even have much of a taste to me, really.

Word to the wise. Next time just dispense with the water and boiling. Throw them in the coals, or grill them directly, all in the shells. They might be a bit more appetizing… garlic butter doesn’t hurt either.

> Is that the paste left over from the wine making process? I tasted some once, and have longed to find it again for cooking. Never knew the name or anything, is that it? Reddish pulpy paste, sweet in a brown-sugar kind of way with a strong red-wine flavor?
>
> And if so, know where I can buy some? 🙂

You could make some by proofing a packet of yeast in a glass of wine, since that’s exactly what wine lees are.

I tried Lavender ice-cream. I can’t really describe how it tasted, some sort of milky sweet.

> How about chocolate-flavored cheese? I ate one tiny piece of it and wanted to barf.

I had some chocolate goat cheese the other day. The weirdest thing, really, was how un-weird it was: it tasted just exactly like goat cheese with cocoa. You’d think combining those two foods would be interesting in some way - good or bad, but it wasn’t. Not interestingly good, but not horribly bad.
Strange.

Powdered carob and sugar mixed with ricotta cheese for a dessert. Interesting…though it looks chocolatey, it has its own odd taste. (I’ve made it with cocoa powder, much better.)

I tasted Cyanogen Chloride today. Since it didn’t kill me, I can post about it. I didn’t care for it.

Got a big container of Kraft Parmesan sprinkle cheese a few years back at Sams’s Club. Get home use it on spaghetti and spit out my first bite. I’ve never tasted anything so insanely vile. Look closer at the label and notice it’s “fat free” Kraft sprinkle cheese. Not sure what replaced the milk solids, but it was a mess that tasted (literally) like salty sawdust.

Ordered a steak salad at Outback once. The rare steak was super salty, and the salad leaves were \*soaked \*in a cloying, insanely sweet raspberry walnut dressing, and as the finishing touch it had blue cheese bits crumbled liberally across the top. I am (trust me) not a picky eater and indivisually I might have tolerated each item, but that hellish taste combo beat me into submission, then raped me in the ass. I had to push it away.
