Google says that [Steiger](http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=steiger+beer), is a fine Continental European beer, but I’m pretty sure it was also a make of horrible cheap beer I tried once when after something to quickly through in the fridge and eat with a pizza a short while after.

Nothing redeeming about it, in fact there wasn’t much flavour at all. Fizzy, alcoholic, tasted like it contained alcohol, not even close to the supermarket own brand beers in the UK.

> I think Corona would be better if they’d put it in brown bottles. That crap always tastes skunky to me. I’ve wanted to do a side-by-side tasting of Corona bottled vs. on tap, but haven’t been able to find it on tap somewhere convenient to me.

The whole idea of green and clear beer bottles is to skunk the beer. It’s desirable to some people. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have some light-exposure process for the canned and kegged beer, too, just for consistency. I like it sometimes, but when it gets too bad it can start tasting like armpit. Heineken, I’m looking at you.

No beer should ever be skunked, for any reason whatsoever. People who desire it are probably the same ones that vote Republican and eat at Applebee’s.

+1

Although, I could swear that I have read in a reputable beer brewing book that Corona is purposely lightly skunked even in the canned varieties because it’s the flavor people expect. Unfortunately, I can’t find any corroboration for this, but damn me if I hadn’t read it somewhere seemingly authoritative.

Yea, Tequiza is for people who want to relive the flavor of a 3:00 a.m puking extravaganza after a 6 hour corona with tequila back binge. MMM… the taste of Tijuana.

I’m a fan of Dos Equis, myself, but I feel like a slob tourist if I call it a “Mexican Beer.” Everything about its being is very German. I’ll drink a Corona when I goto the Tex Mex restaurant, that’s about it; it goes well with Brisket.

While it would not be my beverage of choice, I didn’t find anything actively offensive about it. Like a lot of cheap beers, it didn’t really taste bad because it didn’t have much flavor at all. It was just a cheap alcohol delivery system.

Exactly. It’s kind of like the “winner” of the malt liquor category. It’s bad, but better than all other high alcohol and cheap beer.
I should also add this nasty one to the mix. [Labaat Maximum Ice. 7.1% alcohol and horrible through and through.](http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/labatt-maximum-ice/8945/)

It’s exactly five dollars after tax for a forty of that bad boy. Very popular among the clientèle near my sketchy neighbourhood.

After watching the Simpsons with a buddy, we decided to make _Skitllebrau_ out of Maximum Ice and skittles. That made it much, much worse. 😃

> I had a friend from Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania who was proud of the fact that **Yuengling** is the oldest brewery in America. So on a trip to Penn, we bought a case for each of us. He was the only one who could drink the stuff. It honestly tasted like they were still selling beer from the first batch made in 1829. Four cases of beer went to waste. And I can tolerate Keystone, that’s how bad this stuff was.

It may have to do with when you bought the beer. My folks moved to central Pennsylvania, near the Yuengling brewery, in the mid-80s. I remember that the beer was, really, not very good back then. I read that they got a new brewmeister from Germany or Belgium since then, and now i really like the beer there.
I now live in Baltimore, where the traditional beer is National Bohemian, or NatiBo. I like their images around the city with the NatiBo guy…bu the beer is undrinkable in my opinion.
I would rate the NatiBo with the Raffo I had while I was in the military stationed in Southern Italy. When it comes to beer, Italians make good wine. Raffo is probably the worst thing I drank until NatiBo.

I remeber catchin’ swigs of beer from my Dad’s Can. I remember the [Old Dutch Can](http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200267134730&rvr_id=&crlp=1_263602_263622&UA=WXF%3F&GUID=d6232b071240a075f9706370ffffae7e&itemid=200267134730&ff4=263602_263622). It tasted good as far as I could tell… I remember that it was one of the decent, but cheaper beers. It’s ‘_The Good Beer_’. Not Great, not Bad, but good.

Where? Just this week I saw it across the border (Wussconsin into Ill-annoy) and it was $1.29 for a 24 ounce, $1.89 for a 40 ounce.

I no longer have my manual, but (I’m embarrassed to admit) I used to teach a chapter about beer at a bartending school, and one of the things we mentioned was that brown bottles were to help prevent skunky beer, fwiw. Also, beer has a shelf life, and Budweiser has a code on their labels that tells you exactly when it was bottled but damned if I can remember how to read it anymore. There are little slot-like marks on the label that correspond to the date it was bottled, and I _think_ it was supposed to have a 3 month shelf life, but I truly don’t remember as I’m getting to be senile as all hell. ETA-at least there were little slot like marks 15 years ago, which was the last damn time I looked at a Budweiser bottle.

This reminds me of an old college beef. I used to throw small parties, 10-15 people or so, and I always provided beer, a bottle or two of liqour and some mixers. I used to buy something inexpensive, but reliable like Yeungling or JD’s Honeybrown, that most people liked.

So, they would complain that I always bought the same beer, and show up with something “different”. Usually something with a funny name. They’d drink one or two, decide it was piss, then plow through my beer. Keep in mind this is PA, where it’s a pain to get less than a case. So after the party, I’d end up with a fridge full of beer I didn’t like. Used to rive me crazy. One particular loser was Pigs Eye Pilsner, which was absolute bilge. After it sat for 2 months in my fridge, I waited for my friend who bought it to have a party, then I brought it over and left it in HIS fridge. I think it was there until graduation. 🙂

> Because many of the best known imports come in clear or green bottles consumers have come to associate a skunky aroma with imported, often more expensive beer. That doesn’t mean their brewers intended them to taste that way.

[And another](http://beeradvocate.com/articles/527):

> This light-struck condition is often to blame for a skunked beer. Many popular imports are distributed in green bottles. Pair the two, mix with misinformation and an inexperienced palate, and the common belief becomes that if beer is in a green bottle, it has to be skunked.
>
> […]
>
> Well, it’s not like there’s an international conspiracy by the brewery to expose all of its beer to being light-struck before being sold. Breweries are not in the business to sell spoiled beer

Pilsener Urquell, which comes in a green bottle, is certainly not supposed to taste skunked. I reckon that some imports (Grolsch, Pilsener Urq., Heineken, Beck’s) are sold in green bottles mostly for marketing reasons. They are not supposed to taste skunked unless they are handled improperly and left exposed to the light for too long. Also, mind you, there is a difference between a skunky taste in beer and the slight sulfurous taste certain strains of yeast leave behind. I think the difference is quite obvious. A skunky beer smells exactly like a skunk or one of those skunk scratch-n-sniffs. Sulfurous is, well, sulfurous–a bit eggy.

Now, the only exception I could find is what I wrote about Corona upthread. And I can’t find any source backing me up on this, so I may very well be guilty of spreading misinformation a la the brewmaster you talked to.

Ontario. Thanks to our state controlled liquor monopoly, that _is_ cheap. Although for a brief while, Colt 45 and Schlitz were both under 5 dollars. Then they jacked up their prices.
