Look, it’s gotta be North Korea. Even these war-torn impoverished African hellholes can’t be as bad as North Korea. In Africa you’ve got your extended family (at least when they aren’t all killed in some tribal massacre or by AIDS), you’ve got your traditional culture, you may be living a life that resembles that lived by a dark ages peasant, but at least such a life is livable, for the folks that live.
But North Korea? This is a country that seems to have taken George Orwell’s 1984 as a blueprint for how to run a country, kind of like the Iotians from TOS. A brutal totalitarian dictatorship that has enough control to actually be totalitarian. In African authoritarian dictatorships the dictators are horrible, but they don’t have that much actual power outside the capital, and the power they do have is mostly limited to shooting people. North Korea is totalitarian, people have absolutely no privacy, there is no public space that is not run by the state, absolutely nothing is permitted except the will of the state. North Korea’s only hope is a famine so severe that half the country dies and the state collapses.
I am a little confused as to why you would call one person at this meeting a sex slave. I am also totally at a loss to see why anything you say here negates any of the negative comments I had to do with the Sudanese government. There are certainly smart people in the Sudan. And the peace between the north and south is improving things. But there are smart people in all the countries described as screwed up.
I just don’t see the Sudanese government as meriting any degree of trust right now.
