Thought of another: _Leo and Loree_. Donnie Most as a romantic leading man. Let that sink in.

This was while he was still doing _Happy Days_, so it was impossible not to think of him as anyone but Ralph Malph. Most was out of his element to begin with, and wasn’t helped by a story that was a variation on _A Star is Born_ that sought out every possible tired cliche and presented it as though it had never been thought of before. Leo was basically a jerk and an idiot but the script had people reacting to him like he was as charming as Cary Grant.

> I saw the thread title and before even hovering I was thinking, “Man, I’ll bet someone puts **Joe vs. the Volcano** up against the wall.” Guess I nailed that! Regrettably, JvTV is nothing like a bad movie. In fact it is one of the few Hollywood films that remains relevant despite the comings and going of societal trends & attitudes. It’s fine if you can recognize recurring themes, but don’t blame the movie if you can’t work out what to make of them. It’s fucking _timeless_. To speak vehemently otherwise is to expose oneself as a nave at best, or at worst a discord-sowing Russian internet bot.

Fie, I say. The “recurring themes” were heavy-handed, clumsy and trite, which is not my fault. It’s a pleasantly banal film that tries to be more significant than it is, is all. It definitely ain’t Fellini.

> [@](#):

> **Tank Girl** is wonderful because it’s a goofy adaptation of a goofy comic book series, and the acting is over the top campy on purpose. It’s a mockery of a story about people who think life itself is a mockery. The sound track is one of the best, and unsurprisingly draws heavily from a genre which refuses to take life seriously. Again, don’t blame the movie if you don’t get the joke.

This I agree with (including the point about the soundtrack), although it needed a better villain. I thought Petty rocked it, and they even did a tolerable job with the kangaroos given the technology of the time. It wasn’t quite as chaotic and raw as the comics but the comics would have made a terrible long-form film and would have been a complete hot mess. As it was, I thought it was fun.

Was that the one with the Fountain of Youth and the Orion Nebula and the guy who’s wife’s soul is in a tree that he’s taking to the Orion Nebula so that she’ll come back to life when the supernova happens (again, somehow)? Because that’s the worst movie I ever saw all the way through, but I might be misremembering the name.

No, that’s “The Fountain”, an Aronofsky film starring Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz. It’s a beautiful film but at the end of it I went “Did they just spent 90 minutes and millions of dollars in special effects to say ‘It’s okay to die’?”.

Yes. Yes they did.

I seem to recall Petty saw the script and recognized Rebecca as herself. The role didn’t really require her to ‘perform’ so much as to simply don the make up and recite the lines.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: _Liquid Sky_.

It’s a gawdawful sf movie set in the Eighties NYC punk club scene, about an alien vampire who kills people by drawing off their life essence when they have an orgasm… or some such nonsense. Urrrrrk. A ridiculous plot, terrible acting, awful music and ludicrous dialogue. I saw it once in college and remain deeply scarred to this day. I hate, hate, _hate_ this movie - still my all-time most-loathed movie.

Back in the 70’s I went to a drive-in double feature: _Halloween_ and _Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band_. Guess which one gave me nightmares?
That’s right-The one that was greenlighted, produced, directed and cast through the use of massive amounts of cocaine.

Well, I liked **Eraserhead**. Th worst movie I ever saw in a theater was **The Turning Point** , a 1977 film staring Shirley MacLaine and Anne Bancroft. I fell asleep and when woken up at the end had a stiff neck.

Awww…I liked Liquid Sky. And the weird soundtrack (20th-century electronica meets 17th-century French court music).

My issue was that I kept hoping that all that nonsense was attempting to convey something deeper than a message one could just have easily have gotten from a fortune cookie. But it really wasn’t - I’ve even done some digging and nope, the whole point is that “it’s okay that people die”. So profound, I \*don’t \*think.

But it did look nice.

> _The English Patient_.

Oh, man, did I hate this movie. I had to run the projector for this seemingly endless movie. Again. And. Again. My favorite _Seinfeld_ episode is the one where Elaine hates this movie.

However, of all movies which I went into with high expectations, and ended up despising with every cell in my body, I’d have to go with _Forrest Gump_. My gawd do I hate that movie.

Another movie I hate, which unlike _Forrest Gump_, most people agree with me is a waste of time, is an art film called _The Scenic Route_. I’d tell you what it’s about, except I’m really not sure. It’s got something to do with two sisters who are dating the same man, but that’s as far as I got. It was released in 1988, even though it was filmed in 1978, which might be why it’s called “The Scenic Route.” It does lots of stuff like having the actors play a scene, then showing a bit of an opera, or cutting to a Renaissance painting, then to a scene of the actors posed like the models in the painting. The theme of the opera or whatever is supposed to somehow reflect the scene, but the scenes were non sequiturs, I thought. I don’t know. Maybe there was a story, and the artsy stuff was distracting, or maybe I was to shallow to follow it. I am not going to watch it again to find out.

In general, though, when I go into a movie with the expectation of it being bad, I have a good time. I love _Plan 9 from Outer Space_. I love William Castle films. I love MST3K-type films, even when they are not part of MST3K. In fact, when I do watch it, there is a good chance I have already seen the film “free-standing,” so to speak.

“Highlander 2” is an easy winner for me in the category of Movies I Paid To See, and even beats out all entried in the Movies I Saw For Free category, though it’s a close call over “Battlefield Earth.”
