What's up with gluten intolerance?

To be precise and avoid confusing bystanders, barley (and rye) is lumped in with wheat and oats as grains that aggravate celiac disease. So apparently barley has some allergen as part of it not related to its gluten, and not related to the allergen contained in wheat, etc.

My 72 year old dad was diagnosed with Celiac just a year ago. His condition manifests itself in skin rashes. Horrible, icky, oozy skin rashes. He knows that by eliminating gluten (which is in just about every damn processed thing we eat) that the rashes go away. He’ll go a few weeks without, and then knowingly indulge some gluteny goodness and will have to suffer for it. He picks the goodies off the top of pizzas, trying carefully to avoid the crust. If the goodies he picks off and eats have any of the soft crusty layer, he’ll get a rash.

He has lost a lot of weight, I think due to this disease. It’s definitely a difficult regimen to follow.

My baby boy (adam, 1.5) is quite small for his age. He’s not gaining weight like he should and I suspect celiac. Supposedly our ped ordered a test and it came back negative. I never know what to trust though, since doc had completely forgotten about said test during our next visit. I’m gonna have to push the issue during our next appointment which should be soon.

My father, older brother, and twin brother are celiac. If they have anything with gluten in it, they get severe indigestion (my father did have all the necessary tests to confirm it). I am the only one who doesn’t seem to have any of the syptoms. However, I’m the only one who is vegetarian and I have heard that may have something to do with me not suffering from it, at least for now.
