What's up with middle lane meanderers?

I have a Prius and I’m convinced that there is an irrational hatred of them (a notion which this thread is not dispelling) because my maximum speed has not gone down yet I’m being tailgated a lot more. Either that or the speedometer is borked, but it correlates to my ground distance fairly well.

I go from 4 to 7 MPH over the speed limit on 2-lane surface roads, unless I’m being tailgated, in which case I may as well switch to electric because it’s not costing me anything in safety.

It’s probably all the fault of 6 or 7 Prius drivers who are in a hypermiling club, and have ruined it for the rest of them who drive no worse than average.

Keeping in mind that I’ve had a Fusion energi and I’m not against HEV’s and PHEV’s, when I’m behind a Prius, I suspect the worst. Kind of like being behind a Crown Vic. My prejudice is justified too often to give it up.
