I’m talking about the short-brimmed fedoras like [this one](http://www.ansommag.com/images/article/1244485629558_f1_2.jpg), which I suppose is still just a fedora but needs to be distinguished from the longer-brimmed kind.

I went to a club last night (a _very_ rare thing for me) and it seemed like 1 in 3 guys was wearing one of these stupid hats. There was a guy in one of my classes last semester that wore one of these all the time as well. It seems like a downright epidemic among young adult males. Is this just an L.A. thing or are they everywhere? Do people really think you’re cool if you wear one? Aren’t I automatically cooler for rejecting the status quo and _not_ wearing one?

Never mind. I misidentified.

Seems to me the kids (young men) around here have been wearing them for a couple of years. My son keeps one in his car, mostly just wears it now and then for kicks.

I cannot speak to the coolness factor.

when it gets cooler and the guys shift out of [wife-beaters and skater-boi shorts](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3513/3733916931_d640c35301_o.jpg), will they wear them for yet another season with flimsy hoodies, skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors?

Porkpie hats. They’re big with hipsters. I asked about them a while back.

I thought porkpie hat were flat topped rather than pinched in the OP image?

Hats are coming back. That can only be good.

I love wearing a hat.

Hipsters in funny hats, they’re not all pricks but most of 'em are.

</div>

Yes, a porkpie hat has a flat top and a relatively short crown. The hat in the OP is just a short-brimmed fedora, although some call that style “stingy.”

I wore porkpies before it was hip to wear them. (My brims aren’t so stingy, though. I’m too big for a stingy.) I don’t know whether I should keep wearing them and be taken for ‘trendy’, or not wear them until the trend passes (at which point I’ll look like an oldster trying to look young).

Actually, I don’t really give a crap what people think. So I’ll keep wearing them. (I think the patterned grey trilby tomorrow.)

I thought if it looked like a fedora with a skinny brim, it was a [trilby](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilby). I could be wrong.

‘Stingy’ is a hat with a narrow brim. A trilby can be stingy, as can a porkpie.

A trilby usually has a narrower brim, but what really distinguishes it is a higher crown, with a deeper dent, and a tighter pinch in the front.

I came back from Afghanistan and my neighborhood in DC has been overrun with hipsters in those hats. I love love love that the Target in Columbia Heights stocks them so they can buy their unique look in a big box store with underground parking.

It’s an ironic, caricatured lid. It’s meant for doodz who want to _allude_ to the era of brimmed hat wearing, but who would never dream of being so unironic as to wear a grown-up hat with a brim that is anywhere near functional.

I wore hats when it _was_ hip to wear them: the 1960s.

The hipsters wouldn’t look half-bad if they would just stop wearing the hats with JEANS! Sheesh.

Doesn’t “trendy” mean changing your style during and because of a trend?
