(actually, I suppose it should be Unicode these days… )

Well, you’re not too far off. Ancient Hebrew was a numeration system as well as a textual system, and the interactions between the two were (are) believed to have mystical significance. This shows up as part of the Kabbalah, but properly the technique is “gematria”, and it has been used in various mystical systems. As an example Christian Kabbalists would be fond of:

The Hebrew letter corresponding to unity (or 1) is Aleph (A). The name of the letter written out is Aleph-Lamed-Pei (ALP). L has the value 30 and P has the value 80. 1+30+80=111, a triple unity in the single unity. Leave shamrocks for the illiterates.

So, what’s YHVH? Y=10, H=5, V=6, so 26.

Now, The Name is really not the only name used. “Adonai” gets some decent mileage: ADN=1+4+50=55, 5+5=10. 10 and 26 are the two numbers that most often come up in such names, a fact which my advisor half-jokingly points out are the two dimensions that come up in string theory (26 in a purely bosonic theory, 10 with fermions and supersymmetry). You might ask why I added the digits of 55 to get 10, and the answer is basically because that’s what I had to do to get 10. This should tell you something about the rigor of practical Kabbalah.

I should also mention that I don’t believe YHVH is The Name prohibited in the commandment. Moses asked the burning bush “who should I tell the Hebrews has sent me?” since their deity at the time had no known name. God responds with YHVH, which loosely means “I am what I am”, an idiomatic mind-your-own-business. It refers to God as much as Adonai (“Lord”) does, without being His name, even though it is now referred to as “the name”. The name itself was known at one point and used in only one ritual, which took place in the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur. At the destruction of the second temple, knowledge of the true name was wiped out, or so the story goes.
