What's With the "GU" Patch on NFL Uniforms?

It’s distracting and in your face. I greatly appreciate the aesthetics of my team’s uniform (and some others) and don’t particularly like it being marred by that nonsense for a year. A small logo on the back of the helmet like with Sean Taylor last year wouldn’t be as bad, but what they did was about as obtrusive as you could have.

And the guy was no hero - he did nothing to deserve a memorial that extensive.

He was involved in professional football as a player and then player advocate for 41 years. He’s arguably shaped the modern NFL more than any other individual.

ETA: And don’t take this personally, but your team has the ugliest uniform in the league.

Distracting how?

I guess I’m asking what precisely did it distract you from? Certainly not the game. (e.g. “I have no idea how we just scored. I was distracted by the patch.”) And if it doesn’t distract you from the game, who cares? Maybe you and I are different, but I watch football to watch football, anything that doesn’t take away from that is fine by me.

I gotta agree that the patches are ridiculously large.
It was especially distracting to me. My peripheral vision would spot it every time it was on screen, mentally add an “N” in the middle, and subsequently direct my attention to it.

I guess - I’m not too knowledgable about the subject but I’ve read articles that mentioned how he’s generally disliked by the players because he’s constantly screwing them on behalf of the owners, and that he was essentially in the owners’ pockets.

Sir, you wouldn’t know awesome if it kicked you in the balls.

It did distract me from the game. Not to the point where I couldn’t keep up, of course, but certainly I had a reaction to seeing the patch several times. But by this logic - you could cover the players in ads like nascar drivers or put big blinking lights on their helmet and it wouldn’t matter because you could still tell what was happening in the game.

The patch is about as obtrusive as you could expect it to be. They could’ve made it more subtle, displayed it for less of the year, or preferably both.

Count me among those that hate the patch. Yesterday I was trying to remember the last time I saw the Giants play without some sort of patch about something. It’s getting friggin’ ridiculous; somebody is always going to have just died. Can’t we just have a moment of silence before the game and call it done? Do that every week if you must, but please don’t pollute the jerseys with garrish patches and logos.

Not a fan of the Captain patch either. Not even a little.

Like… Reebok?

Personally, I think the patch thing is stupid, but I don’t see how they’re distracting or “polluting the jersey” or whatever.
