In my opinion, the people who "choose to believe “only when death is on their doorstep” are the ones who never were sure about their religion (lack thereof, I mean).

There was a story about Darwin that said, at death, he changed his mind and asked for a Bible, but that has no truth in it.

I recall a SD column about Near-Death Experiences, but I don’t know the link…
