What's wrong with me/my new weed whacker?

All generalizations are wrong, including the above.

You would be very, very wrong. I’ve had my gas one for at least 7 years and have never had a problem.

Ok, your weed whacker is evil, and maybe your husband too. Probably both. That is a weed whacker created by a black magic spell. There is no way it will ever start for you no matter what you do. It will start for your husband out of spite. You should never touch that weed whacker again. An easy way to prove that is to toss it in a lake. If it’s not an evil weed whacker it will float.

Echoing the fuel mix. Most weed eaters are a 40:1 ratio which 3.2 oz per U.S. Gallon. I know from experience that if you have that ratio off by much the engine will either no start or run like crap, choke and die.

I’ve owned at least a dozen weed wackers. I use them commercially. Never had one that wouldn’t start immediately when it was new. Just follow directions from the owner’s manual. Echo is the best of what I’ve owned. John Deere & Stihl are good. Craftsman is crap.

this whole thing is a when and where experience.

different brands can have different quality at different times or in different price ranges of their product.

FWIW I bought a 4-stroke weed eater to get around the whole mixing gas and oil thing, it takes plain old gas. But I also found it starts easier than 2-strokes ever did for me. Still have the bulb and the choke though. Usually 3 or 4 presses of the bulb and full choke, pull until it tries to start, then move choke to 1/2 and it starts up. Let it idle a bit and gradually turn choke off as it warms up.

I’m with TriPolar. I’m sensing…darkness?

Into the lake.

This. I’ve flooded a few engines and never had to pull a spark plug.

… or I could just tell my husband that it’s obviously his job to weed-whack.

You’ve been talking to my wife haven’t you?

That is it! Problem solved!!

Seriously though, IME, if you buy a good brand & have the salesman/woman start it and run it for you, it will give you many years of trouble free service.

I have and operate, 2 each weed eaters. One Stihl, and one Husky. Both with the steel blades. I feed them both 100LL aviation fuel with a 40:1 mix of either Stihl or Husky two cycle oil. My chainsaws also get the same gas with the same mix. I have a 5 gallon can of two cycle oil/gas mix. I use it on all of my two cycle engines.

I have not bought any other brands as both of these work well for me. (If it ain’t broke don’t fix it). I always run the 100LL aviation fuel. It contains its own stabil type stuff and will last for years in airplanes, it also does NOT contain any alcohol. The 2 cycle oil also has some stabil clone and it keeps my saws gas in good shape. My 4 cycle lawnmower is also fed the mix, and while it will foul the spark plug once a year, it does not cause me any other problems. I believe it helps to keep the valves lubed and in good shape.

BTW, I bought a new Husky last year as it was getting low on compression after 15 seasons. The cost for the parts to fix it were right at 1/3 the cost of the new (on sale) machine. I have the old one hanging from the rafters of the barn, just in case. The Stihl is only 10 years old and works well.

Sadly I don’t really trust him to know the plants from the weeds.
