He definitely popularized CB jargon, though.
I shot this interview with Burt at Yahoo a few years ago.
I remember a few details. He was gracious to every single crew member. Worked his way around the room, shaking your hand and looking you right in the eye for a word or two. Since he started as a professional stunt man, this came as no surprise to me- and was quite genuine.
Physically he was demolished- he walked with two canes AND an assistant holding one arm to help him along.
Obviously in a lot of pain. And also obviously 100% sharp as a tack. Quick wit. Quick smile. Twinkle in his eye. Commanded the interview. Just a pleasure to watch this guy do his thing.
A lot of people have been writing things like, " They don’t make them like that any more. " I’d respectfully disagree. Every age has actors who are suffused with serious star power and are focused and gracious. Viola Davis comes to mind. Similarly Ethan Hawke.
Anyway, godspeed to you, Burt. Always give props to someone who does their own stunts !!
I never met Burt, but I was a “co-star” on an episode of Route 66 where he had a bit part along with the stars, Tuesday Weld and Cloris Leachman.
I never knew that until I was grown and found the first part of the episode on Youtube. You can see it here. That’s when I discovered that Burt was in it.
I’m in the first scene after the credits along with my mother and older brother. I think you can figure out my role.
Long after my co-starring experience, I went to the local movie house and watched White Lightning and decided that I liked this actor. I had never seen his TV shows, because we didn’t get those channels when I was a kid.
Regardless, I was always a fan. Sorry to see him go.
