> Not suprisingly, the Puget Sound is full of them. Our own town of Tacoma has the [Weekly Volcano](http://www.weeklyvolcano.com/), which oddly enough is usually bundled within a military newspaper. Seattle has the more “established” alt weekly [Seattle Weekly](http://www.seattleweekly.com/) and the much edgier [Stranger](http://www.thestranger.com/), and numerous specialized papers.

The Volcano also serves the Olympia/Lacey area, so your post is my answer. The military newspaper it’s often bundled with is the Fort Lewis Ranger (Regular Army National Guard Enlisted Reserve).

(I get so annoyed when I want to read the Volcano but the newspaper box packages it with the Ranger and someone has already stolen the Volcano out from inside the Ranger. I should really be more careful when I pick up the paper.)

We’ve got the [Santa Fe Reporter](http://sfreporter.com). A surprisingly decent free weekly, which is nice because the “real” paper in town is _completely_ worthless. The Reporter also puts together an “Annual Manual” every spring, which is an incredibly handy magazine-sized compendium of just about all the little practical things you may want to know, and also great to hand off to guests who are in town, since it’s full of “where to shop” and “where to eat” reviews.

In Albuquerque we’ve got this:

I don’t really like it because its quality of journalism is inconsistent and it tends to project a “hipper than thou” attitude.

But I was shocked to hear about the creator of Thundercats getting killed, so I guess it’s good for something.

Worthless except for the few square inches of Jonesin’ Crossword, which I look forward to all week.

The Examiner has a much better front page. It’s great at showing outrage- I grabbed the one yesterday just because it shared my anger over Metro fare hikes. The Express didn’t even mention it!

> We have the [San Diego Reader](http://www.sandiegoreader.com/). It’s pretty fucking lame, and the paper version is so full of ads and coupons that you struggle to find the actual content. I only bother picking it up if the cover story looks especially interesting.

I loved the Reader when I lived there but that was nearly 20 years ago. It’s a shame that it’s apparently degraded so much.

It’s a little heavy on the Crystal Bowersox coverage at the moment, as she’s a local girl, but it’s generally worth a read through.
