I want some soup. I don’t know how to make soup, so…

Is there a canned soup that you would give rave reviews? Most canned soups taste way too salty to me, but until I learn how to make soup from scratch I’m going to have to buy some.

What I’d really like is a healthy new breakfast option and hot soup on a cold morning sounds pretty good.

Recommend, please?

Campbell’s Chunky Grilled Chicken and Sausage Gumbo. Honestly, Campbell’s went all out to recapture the soup market with these products, but this one in particular is a winner. Spicy, meaty and not way too salty. I hadn’t bought canned soup in decades until this came out.

One of my favorites, it’s what I was going to suggest.
I like Chunky Sirloin Burger too.

I also like Progresso Chicken Barley and Chickarina
A lot of Progresso soups are low sodium.

They’re relatively low in fat, also. But you have to be careful about soups like clam chowder or other cream-based soups, as the fat and salt content jumps dramatically.

I likes my salt. My current favorite is chicken corn chowder from Progresso.

ETA: I’d love to make my own cream soups, but I was raised on canned cream soups so that’s the taste and consistency I’m accustomed to, and I haven’t been able to duplicate that. I can make a roux, like for creamed chipped beef, but the soup base is different.

Campbell’s Cheddar Cheese. They use to have a Nacho Cheese one which I miss. I would use them to make nachos.

Favourite canned soup is Campbell’s Tomato Soup. It is really the only canned soup that I eat as is and when paired with a good grilled cheese sandwich it is comfort food heaven.

If you are feeling adventurous and want to try a simple make it yourself soup I really like Jamie Oliver’s[Chilli Corn Chowder](http://mykitchenantics.blogspot.ca/2013/10/jamie-oliver-20-minute-meals-app-review.html) recipe (although it is a stretch to call it a chowder when a bit of sour cream is the only dairy). This has been my go to recipe for when I want something delicious but don’t want to spend any time or energy on thinking about dinner.

Remember the Soup Nazi episode of Seinfeld? Well, Al Yeganeh, the inspiration for that episode, has a line of packaged soups sold in supermarkets under the brand “[The Original SoupMan](http://originalsoupman.com/).” Strictly speaking, it’s not canned soup, because it’s sold in an aseptic box similar to the packaging for UHT milk. I think it’s pretty good, particularly the chicken noodle soup. However, it’s not cheap; it’s about four bucks, although it’s been on sale at my local supermarket for $3.50. (That may seem shockingly expensive to some, but to me, it’s cheaper than going out for lunch and I’d like to think it’s healthier.)

Campbell’s cream of mushroom is delicious if you slice up 4 or 5 additional mushrooms and add those with a teaspoon of pepper, a dash of cayenne, and whatever shredded cheese you have on hand. The other day I added some crumbled bleu and some mozzarella, and the mushrooms. Wow. Fantastic.

Love this one. Aldi carries a store brand version, which is just as good and a little bit cheaper. I also like Aldi’s Fit and Active Chicken Noodle.

Tastes like childhood. Made with 2% milk, not water. Love it.

Progresso’s Light Beef Pot Roast (the one with the Weight Watcher’s Blazon on it) is another of my favorite, but it’s difficult to find. It’s a lot of people’s favorite, apparently. If you’re into creamy soups, try their Light Chicken and Cheese Enchilada.

Progresso clam chowder.

Following that, most other Progresso flavors.

(Does it annihilate my credibility when I mention I eat 'em at room temp, directly from the can, usually with a spoon but not always?)

For canned, I think Wolfgang Puck’s are pretty good across the board. We tend to buy the Garden Vegetable most often.

A month or two ago, my Mother was coming to visit and I mentioned that I was just getting over a cold. She stopped at Safeway on her way and picked up a container of their house brand pre-packaged chicken noodle from the cold deli case. I was surprised at how good it was … better than some homemade that I’ve had.

Oh, yes! 😃 This is SO excellent! I sometimes use it as a base, I add canned diced tomatoes, some green peppers and onions diced and sauteed, and some rice, maybe a can of beef or chicken broth. Low sodium or no-salt, if possible.

I like Snow’s Clam Chowder, or Progresso Clam Chowder, but it has to be really, really hot. Nothing worse than lukewarm lumpy soup.

Campbells Chicken and Rice has turned astonishingly bland over the years, but I buy cooked potstickers at the hot bar at the grocery, and put them in it, with some sliced scallions and a dash of soy sauce. Sort of a won-ton soup.
