> Thanks for reminding me the classical music canon has great fantasy pieces, too. Love the Grieg but if I had to select my favorite work with a supernatural theme, I’d go with Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

You’re right — almost all of Wagner’s operas involve some degree of mythology, so they should qualify. And John Williams is no Wagner.

I love the _Ring_, and IMO there’s a good case for it being the single most monumental achievement by a composer, ever, since Wagner wrote not just the music, but the libretto, and even the stage directions.

But if you just take the best short selections of pure music from it, I wouldn’t put it over Grieg, nor even give it the top spot on the list of Wagner’s own music. For example, I like the overture from _Tannhauser_ better than anything in the _Ring_ from a purely audio perspective, although nothing beats the _Ring_ for the total experience.

Well, there’s the aria from Lucia di Lammermoor that was played 'round a bit in _ **The Fifth Element** _. Actually, pretty much everything in that movie, musically, was good.

[This performance](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9P4SxtphJ4) of the _Doctor Who_ theme achieve a certain, well, let’s call it charm. (I think the pantomime horse really sells it.) Similarly, there’s [Fireball XL5](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bAChAtdTBc)
