Jupiter is awesome with its swirly bands and the Great Red Spot, but mostly I have an irrational love for the [Galilean moons](http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=iL7&sa=X&tbo=d&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=np&biw=1600&bih=728&tbm=isch&tbnid=pam1ubhF7ohH3M:&imgrefurl=http://www.armaghplanet.com/blog/exploring-jupiters-icy-moons.html&docid=ptHHGGMQ6rPpaM&imgurl=http://www.armaghplanet.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Image-of-Galilean-Moons.jpg&w=580&h=406&ei=dTHBULWGBeqx0AGGqYDYAg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=224&vpy=278&dur=499&hovh=188&hovw=268&tx=152&ty=99&sig=111338706714234820099&page=2&tbnh=123&tbnw=182&start=32&ndsp=37&ved=1t:429,r:55,s:0,i:283), especially Io. I picked Saturn mainly because of Titan.

Isn’t that the one that has features that resemble the Jersey Shore, only with methane instead of water? Sounds like a lame joke, but I’m serious.

Venus. I don’t know. It’s close to the sun, so I always get the feeling that (even though I know the atmosphere is actually deadly), that it’s like some deep green, lush, hot, rain forest-y place. And the whole “Venus Goddess of Love and Beauty” thing too.

The co-orbital moons Janus and Epimethus, the geysers of Enceladus, the two-toned Iapetus (where Clarke put the second monolith in the original book), Hyperion the sponge and of course smoggy Titan. And there is the very odd hexagonal weather pattern at the south pole.

Jupiter, it has the biggest electric field, it radiates energy, it has storms that last for years, it has a number of moons, it might even affect volcanic and tectonic activity here on earth. Named for a god, second brightest planet in the night sky. What’s not to like? The moon is a moon not a planet.

The moon co-orbits the sun with the earth. Why isn’t it a planet?

I’ve heard the argument before that it’s just tradition, and that if we weren’t used to calling Luna a moon we’d call Earth/Luna a double planet.

Yes of course. The term ‘planet’ has no suitable definition for the bodies we know of. Recent changes have just been the result of snotty astonomers trying to pretend the term has some scientific significance. A child could easily see that a definition of planet that includes Jupiter and Mercury, but excludes Pluto and Luna was formed by a bad case of academic cranial rectitis.

The results of this poll are interesting. What spurred it was a show I recorded from the Science channel. They said that Saturn was everybody’s favorite planet. Looks like they were right!

But there’s still a lot of love for Pluto.

We had this argument in General Questions, and your assertions are just wrong. The moon is a moon, not a planet. Its primary motion is around the earth.

Their definition, snotty or not, is consistent. Mercury has cleared its orbital zone; Pluto has not.

Why can’t I pick Earth? No particular attraction, but since I heard Jupiter might be a failed star, that sounds cool, so I picked it.
