This is not true in the least, and you will be unable to come up with a cite. Please issue a retraction.
Lou Reed wrote the song Heroin while he was in college, before he started using the drug.
The John Lennon song “Meat City” appears on the album Mind Games, and also as the B-side of the “Mind Games” single. The single version contains a backwards-masked message from John: “Check the album.” The message on the album version is “Fuck a pig.”
Well, it’s not true as such, but not drawn from thin air either.
I remember reading in a book that lennon was singing those lyrics in a demo. I cannot remember the title. However, the spanish beatles page, also makes this claim.
From the Spanish Beatles page:
Baby You’re a Rich Man
Lennon-McCartney
John: Clavioline, Piano and Lead Vocal
Paul: Bass Guitar, Piano and Backing Vocal
George: Lead Guitar, Handclapping, Backing Vocal
Ringo:Drums, Tambourine and Handclapping
Eddie Krammer: Vibraphone
Once again the talents of John and Paul got together to create a single song. Baby You’re a Rich Man was originally an Unfinished McCartney song, while John had his “One of the Beautiful People”. Combining both, The Beatles recorded it at the Olympic Sound Studios in barely 6 hours (the first time a song was completed totally outside Abbey Road). The track was intended originally for the Yellow Submarine project. However, it was soon included in the All You Need is Love single and didn’t make it to the Yellow Submarine soundtrack. Nevertheless, the song does appear in the film, as John sings “how does it feel to be one of the beautiful people”.
One of the Beautiful People, was a song written by John referring to the new generation of hippies that had a positive way of thinking towards life. Everything was beautiful in a sense, and as Paul said in an interview “everything’s great and there’s no bad ever if I can think of it as great”. The other song, Baby You’re a Rich Man, was in fact about Brian Epstein, and the sense of the lyrics according to John were clear: “stop moaning, you’re a rich man…” In a demo version of the song John even sung “baby you’re a rich fag jew”
The Spanish Beatles Page is not considered to be an authority on the subject, on the internet or anywhere else, for that matter. None of the authors and researchers I’ve ever dealt with would cite it as a source for anything. I’ve never seen it listed in any of my hundreds of books. There is an urban legend, along the same line as “Paul Is Dead” that John was singing that “rich fag Jew” thing on the coda, but it has no basis in reality. If there is in fact a recording of John demoing his song, nobody outside his immediate circle has ever heard it - otherwise I would have a copy.

You sound like you know your stuff.
Yeah, I started compiling data on their career and records in 1971. At one point, it looked like it would be a good encyclopedia. Then the digital revolution came, and it looked like it would make a good CD-ROM. Then the internet happened before I could afford to join it. Beatles websites sprung up like mushrooms after a rainfall. Then I discovered that Apple wouldn’t allow me to have the rights to create a CD-ROM encyclopedia on them, nor use any sound, nor their name, which is a registered trademark… so I said, “screw it.” I’ve contributed to quite a few publications and websites that are used as reliable sources of information, though.
Oh yeah.
Rule #1 is: Don’t talk about Fight Club.
Rule #2 is: Don’t tug on Superman’s cape.
Rule #3 is (insert Hi Opal reference): Don’t fight a land war in Asia or go up against a Sicilian when life is on the line
Rule #4 is: don’t mess with fishbicycle when it comes to Beatles knowledge. Just don’t. Go Ken - you know your stuff!
Then who, other than the backup singers, is singing (during the parts of the song that are actually sung).
Some Swedish dude, from the band Gemini, sings the chorus. Murray Head just does the rapping.
Man, I don’t even know how I know that, I don’t think I was even alive when that song came out. Picked it up in some past trivia thread, probably.
“There is a rumor about the song that during the fade-out, Lennon sang “Baby you’re a rich fag Jew” as a dig at Epstein, who was Jewish and a homosexual.” Cite
It’s also referred to in books by Ray Coleman and William Dowlding
I said it was a legend, not documented fact, and there are three references to it. Unless you are John Lennon (which would be totally awesome) and can refute this, we’ll have to agree that it’s a disputed claim - but by no means “not true in the least.”
Sorry, that was ref to the obnoxious “Who the Fuck is Ingwe Malmsteen?” t-shirts that his fans wear. I know who Ann Wilson is.
This is what Bob Spitz has to say in The Beatles
The latter quote is credited to MacDonald, Revolution in the Head.
I have no way of knowing who is the original source for the quote. And it might be true that “everyone else was spared” just as someone uncredited said.
But we now have a number of authoritative books reporting this as fact. Spitz’s book, regardless of how it is considered by insiders, will be the book on the Beatles to turn to for the immediate future.
And his account of the recording session is nothing like your mention of John demoing his song. Again, I have no idea whether any recordings exist of the fooling around, but your denial doesn’t cover this situation.
Maybe it’s an urban legend, perpetuated because it sounds exactly like something John would do. Maybe it’s real, because it sounds exactly like something John would do. I don’t know. But it can’t be dismissed quite as easily as you’re doing.
I know I hate it when people make silly comments about the Marx Brothers, so I understand your frustration. But you are out of line here. How about coming back when you cool down and giving us more facts?
I haven’t been hot, except when I was just outside, and I’ve already cooled down. Here are some facts: Nobody, outside of John Barrett (deceased) and Mark Lewisohn have ever had the privilege of listening to all of The Beatles’ master tapes since they were recorded. Barrett’s notes went into the making of Lewisohn’s book. There’s no mention of this bit of lyric being on any tape in “Recording Sessions.”
Ian MacDonald wasn’t at Olympic that day. I’d be interested to know what his source for this story is. It’s entirely plausible that in late-night, stoned revelry that John did sing alternate lyrics on some takes. But it’s not on the record. And there is no evidence that John’s original title for the song was “Baby You’re A Rich Fag Jew.” There is evidence in print that this legend exists. But without the session tape available to hear, and no demo for this song in circulation, we don’t have any way to prove that it’s true.
Do you think George Martin would have let it out with that kind of epithet audible in the recording? Do you think the head of EMI would have let it out if he’d known it was there, or that he wouldn’t have had any copies containing it recalled and repressed without it?
Wikipedia reports the claim that you can hear it on the song as a rumor. Yes, that’s a stupid claim.
But the rest of the cites make a different claim, that John sang the words as a lark in a form that would never reach the public, but would inevitably get back to Epstein. Lots of sources, though of unknown provenance, say that this is true. Including the one given by mr. jp that you so belittled. Not at all the same as the Paul Is Dead nonsense. And not at all dismissible.
I’m sorry you feel I’m trying to belittle anyone, or that I have some kind of hostile intent that I need to cool down from. That isn’t the case at all.
